GREAT diet/way of life
UPDATE 2012-04-04: Today my doctor wants to half my blood pressure meds. Down 26 pounds in a month and a half and I still haven't added in exercise yet...I am on day 18 of the diet. I bought the book with the intention of following the 21 day meal plan. My father had followed the diet after taking Dr. Shintani's class in Nuuanu. He had lost about 60 pounds in 4 or 5 months. He really did well. Too well. All his medications became a danger to him. Anyway, I have done Atkins in the past and did okay with it, but just wasn't able to go back to salad and steak diet. So I bought this book and the cookbook and his updated Hawaii Diet. To be honest, I have been using them as a reference and not reading them straight through. I used the menus for the first several days and then used the ideas and principles and made my own meal plans. The one negative thing I can say for the book is that there is no index, so when you want to look up things like Sweeteners or Snacks, it's a bit of a search. The second bummer is there is no electronic book version of this. The third bummer is that Dr. Shintani has a website and it is as cheesy looking as cheesy gets. I think a family friend must have made it. What annoys me most is that it's the type of quality you would expect from a snake oil salesman. Which is a huge injustice to his program. I know there is a shorter diet in his Hawaii Diet book, but I am going to do the 21 days just to see. Here's my story. I have heretofore eaten a lot of fast food and drink a good bit of diet soda every day. The first two days on this diet on his menu were very hard for me because I was going through caffeine withdrawal AND fast food withdrawal at the same time. I had strong cravings and felt a little tired because of the caffeine withdrawal. After maybe 3 days we started ad libbing the menus to things we had had that we liked. My two concerns were my blood pressure and my weight. My bp started at 137/104(on medication) and is today, after 18 days 111/84(still on meds). I plan to be able to get rid of the meds before my bottle runs out in a month or so. I won't tell my starting weight, but it has dropped 18.5 pounds. I have a LONG way to to go, but the great thing is that I don't crave the foods I used to eat. My taste buds have VERY surprisingly changed and I enjoy a lot of the food I eat. I eat a LOT more than I used to and snack on fruits and whole grains in between meals and still drop weight. One thing I didn't mention is this is only through the diet, not exercise. Shintani recommends exercise, but our weather has been stormy and unfriendly for the most part of the month, so I have only gotten exercise on 2 days of the 18. So I imagine the results would look even more amazing with exercise. The book is well worth the price. It has been VERY good on my health and once you do it a little, it becomes easier. I used to think of it as I would do it for 3 weeks and then modify. Now I think I will do this forever and have maybe a cheat meal a week. I don't know if my taste buds will like said cheat meal, but I like to have the option there just in case...oh, and I'm saving LOTS of money buying veggies and fruits instead of fast food and restaurants...and I feel GREAT!

Success Finally!
I followed this eating plan with excellent results, The Doctor puts the info in such positive termsthat you can't go wrong and you want to read more. I enjoyed the way he visually displays how muchveggies you'd have to eat to equal 2500 calories. Even though I was eating veggies all the time I was satisfied.I started out at 226 and ended up at 185 in 22 weeks (Feb to July 2011).That's from a 38" waist to 34" waist. My cardio of choice was walking daily. I'm workingtowards a 32" waist by including free weights and lifting heavy (I reached a plateau in July). Overall his book is a good solid read.I give this book 5 stars due to the results. I'll keep the readers posted on my goal of a 32" waist.- Kevin C.

Easy to follow & stay on track
Dr. Shintani gives Practical information for a lifestyle change. I appreciate his "black & white" approach to food choices. No more calorie counting and measuring what I eat!
