Sustain is just going to put this out there: They're passionate. They sell condoms and other sexual wellness products, yes. But they're so much more than that. They're here to create change. They believe in birth control, without stigma and free of toxic chemicals. Using sex as a conversation starter—is there a better topic?—their goal is to get people to think about sustainability, justice, and equity every time they open a condom, even though they’re understandably distracted. They want to educate and help people connect the dots between condoms and hunger, health care, poverty, and climate change. They hope to inspire people to make the world a better place. They're all about responsibility—not just personal, but corporate. They want the world to be better off than it was before their products, which is why 10 percent of their profits support women’s reproductive health care. All that and recycled packaging, too! They will never solve the myriad of complex problems we face one at a time. Social inequity produces poverty, poverty results in hunger, hunger encourages unsustainable agricultural practices that result in global climate change. Sustain is about recognizing connections, taking on the system not the individual problems. Clearly this is not business as usual. It’s a movement. Welcome to Sustain. 10%4Women When you build a business, you always think beyond your product. The lack of reproductive health care in the U.S. for many, many women is appalling. So much can be avoided when family planning, sex ed, and basic health care services like STD testing and breast examinations are accessible. So Sustain is donating 10 percent of their pretax profits to women who currently lack this access. Yes, 10 percent. They decided who to work with as their initial non-profit partners in various ways- they even sit on the boards of some of the organizations—but basically they all have the same mission: each promotes healthy reproductive health care. If you go through the list, you may wonder how some of them fit this description. What does the Breast Cancer Fund have to do with reproductive health care? It’s all connected. They work to remove toxic chemicals from the environment, including ones that can interfere with women’s reproductive systems.
