Not awesome :( Review Updated.
I bought this for a gift for my Boyfriend who happens to be a Chef. I have never made tortillas, myself so I didn't really know what to get, or what would be high quality. To my surprise, its very heavy and durable. He said, "this is the best gift ever!" He has used it 5 times this week. Tortilla making couldn't be easier. I would absolutely buy this again.****Update*** The handle broke off! I can't figure out how to contact seller.... SUPER Disappointed.

Do you want things to be flat?! THIS is how you make them flat! Mostly food stuffs.
This is advertised as a tortilla press. I don't need a tortilla press. All of the tortillas I buy at the store are already PLENTY flat and don't rise much. Maybe they do somewhere else, but not mine.I got this in order to help make tamales! And it squished the tamale wraps perfectly! It has an infinitely variable pressure (personal arm strength required) system and a nice round measurement. It is lighter than I thought. I probably wouldn't try and crush anything really big in this. Bones - yes (small ones, fingers, toes, teeth, MAYBE ulna - but definitely NOT a femur). Walnuts? Maybe, if you can keep them in. Peanuts? Yes. Marbles? Yes.If you can heat this up hot enough, like REALLY REALLY hot, you still won't be able to apply enough pressure to create diamonds. Maybe CZ. Probably not though.

Could be sturdier
It definitely gets the job done. Two things I don’t like are the sturdiness- the handle could be more sturdy, and the coating comes off leaving tiny bits of metal or whatever it is. I use it for tortillas and to flatten homemade sausage patties out a bit.

perfect for tamales!
I haven't had my press very long, but I've used it several times already to help me make tamales. I saw a video of a woman using a tortilla press with some plastic to press the masa for easy tamales, and this works like a charm. When I bought this, before I received it, I saw all the negative reviews on this and got a little nervous. It does not come with instructions, but you do need to assemble it when you receive it. The arm is very lose, and can be shifted easily, but it doesn't need to be tight. I can't imagine how hard people must have been pressing their tortillas to cause it to break, though admittedly I only bought it for tamales, and don't want my masa super flat or it's impossible to transfer over to the corn husk. I would say though if you get it for tortillas, don't press it super hard, it does it's job just fine with a little bit of pressure.

Updated: Heavy duty tortilla press. Warped or uneven.
It arrived quickly and in very good condition. It's very heavy and came unassembled. Assembly was easy enough by just unscrewing the bolt, sliding it back through the handle and reattaching the nut. Obviously use common sense on this because it did not come with instructions.Opening up the unit I noticed that there were some imperfections. This is typical of cast iron work anyway so it's not a big deal. It had some small holes and some protrusions. These may cause tortillas to stick so I would suggest using paper to press your tortilla dough in. The top plate measures 7 1/8 inches The bottom plate measures 7 3/8 inches. It also has two lift tabs on either side of the top plate. That's good for left or right handed people. Looking at it through the profile I noticed that it has a slight gap that goes all the way through. That is perfect. That way you don't squish your tortillas so thin that they're unusable. The outer coating seems to be a little bumpy. I'm hoping it will not flake off after continued use and cleaning. But since I'll be using paper to press my tortilla dough in I don't think it matters. Unless of course you're one of those folks who really get upset on the appearance of your appliances. It weighs 4.6 lbs. so after eating all those delicious tortillas you can use it for an exercise weight. The box says that the press is made in China or maybe it's the box that's made in China, I'm not sure. Other than that it appears to be a heavy duty tortilla press. I'm very happy with the purchase and the price point. I'm looking forward to using mine tonight.UPDATE: Okay so I used it and I had some problems with it. It is warped. It flattens and squishes on one side to the point of unusability. And on the other side it remains thick and not flattened. It looked more like a wedge door stop. After making six or seven tortillas all resulting with the same squish resulting in something that look more like a smear on the same side, I gave up. I ended up going back to my old 6-in press.I wouldn't be able to say that all of them are like this but this one certainly is warped. It does not give you an even press. Not even if you turn the tortilla after pressing it the first time carefully. You'll just end up with more sides smeared. It was too much work and too much trouble.

Exactly What We Wanted/Expected
I bought this tortilla press as a sort of anniversary gift for my husband. We opened it together and he laughed when he saw what I bought him. He put it together quickly on the spot, and we've already used it twice since we bought it (for pupusas, and homemade tortillas of course!) It is easy to use(would suggest cutting a plastic bag to use for extra non sticking purposes), easy to clean, and we store it easily in a cabinet between uses. Would recommend, looks and works exactly like we wanted.

Don’t press too hard.
It’s a great tortilla press just be careful on pressing too hard. Seems a bit brittle.
