Serviceable exploration of africannhistory
This series is interesting. The idea of these short introductions is very appealing, but always at risk of being too shallow, too short. Africa is not easy, and this little book certainly is a good first look. It could use a chapter on the geography of the whole continent, and how that created the conditions for the different regional developments. That seems to me to be the only way of pulling a coherent view of Africa's seemingly incoherent regionalism into some sort of perspective. It is a collection of vignettes, and it could be a place to start. It certainly shows you some of the diversity.

accessible format and engaging storytelling
This is an excellent guide that explores the rich history and achievements of Africa's ancient kingdoms. The book covers cultural practices, technological advancements, economic systems, governance structures, and military strategies of civilizations like Egypt, Kush, Punt, Carthage, Ghana, Kerma, and Aksum. It provides a well-rounded view of these empires' contributions to world history. It’s a valuable resource that highlights Africa's sophisticated structures, which are often overshadowed by European conquests. However, the book primarily focuses on North and East African empires before 1000 CE, and does not cover West, Central, or Southern African empires like Dahomey, Ashanti, or Zulu. Despite this limitation, the detailed exploration of the included empires provides a deep understanding of their significance. The book has an accessible format and engaging storytelling. I highly recommend it to history enthusiasts and anyone looking to expand their knowledge.I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ancient African Empires
I really enjoyed this book which gave excellent Historical overviews of Egypt, Ghana, Punt, Carthage, Kerma and Aksum! North African kingdoms that played important roles with regards to trade, culture and battle. Egypt of course being the crown jewel of north Africa. Anyone not familiar with this history will learn that the Africans had highly developed civilizations which included high level chemistry and metallurgy as well as medicine. The issue of slavery which as an institution played an important role in establishing several African kingdoms but was also instrumental in supplying slave labor to Muslim countries as well as the Americas. What was also interesting was the overview of the punic wars between Carthage and Italy. I highly recommend this one as an entry point to African history.

Ancient African Empires
Another very informative and interesting book by Billy Wellman. I knew virtually none of this. I did not even know of several of the cultures though I am 86. I learned a little re the Punic Wars in my high school Latin class. My school never hinted at any of this material; they probably still do not.Worth reading for anyone over age 13.Time to broaden our world history knowledge beyond Europe!! These cultures have contributed to our knowledge.
