Doctor Who: Peter Davison Complete Season One (BD) [Blu-ray]

Comically Bad
The extras are worth it for this set because the commentary with just the actors, director and script editor or various combinations of the three is hilarious. I hate the commentaries when they have someone unrelated to the production sitting in and treating the show from this era like it is a Ingmar Bergman or a complex Werner Herzog movie and worthy of dissection and study, like Resurrection of the Daleks is The Seventh Seal or Fitzcarraldo. I know that's a good final season 5th doctor story but come on....lighten up. The commentaries without those people treat the show as an average fan would and they can throw in stories about the production average fans can't do which helps make sitting through something like Time Flight worth it. ALL of the old commentaries done by the cast, director and script editor are good and that alone is why I give this 5 stars. The season itself isn't the greatest of the classic series. Four to Doomsday and Kinda are probably my favorites. Castrovalva is well done but too confusing for me to get into. Visitation and Earthshock are the classics from the 5th Dr era, Black Orchid is a strange 2 parter and Time Flight is among the worst. I sometimes wonder what anyone's reaction to Time Flight is without commentary like I wonder what their reaction is to watching Plan 9 From Outer Space, Monster A-Go-Go and Manos the Hands of Fate. Things happen in that go well beyond the limits even in Science Fantasy like landing the Concord on not only uneven terrain but on what looks like an emptied river bed in a particularly rocky section of the river. Then make enough speed to take off from it! I can take the 4th doctor being shrunken to the size of a germ so he can travel in a body easier. This is like doing a Doctor Who with landmark buildings flying fully formed from London to New Orleans and landing fully intact. The JNT years are the worst possible introduction to the classic series for those who only know the new one. Everything seems wrong and like it was deliberately made to be wrong. There's that and at times it gets painfully boring. I know shows moved at a slower pace then but a 3rd Doctor 7 part story moves faster than the average 4 part 5th Doctor Story. That's all down to writing. No other excuse fits.Highly recommended for the extras. The commentaries are truly hilarious.

Very nice set for 5th doctor
I had not really ever watched this till I picked up this set but have really been enjoying it. The picture quality is good and there are plenty of extras. Set arrived in excellent shape and comes with a slip cover. Very impressed with this set, I would recommend for anyone trying to build up their Doctor Who collection

Great re-master with lots of extras!
I just purchased this new Blu-Ray set of Peter Davison's first season and I have to say they did a great a job with the remaster! The video is noticeably more clear and crisp than the earlier DVDs and they have lots of nice special features, including commentary by the original actors and writers. In several episodes, there are improved special effects that you can opt for in the Special Features before you play the episode. These effects were pretty well done, especially in the Castrovalva episode. If you like Peter Davison as Dr. Who, you will appreciate this new Blu Ray upgrade. I hope they release the second season with Peter Davison soon!

Davison’s Fifth Doctor follows Bakers swan song with fun, engaging adventures!
Blu Ray arrived in great condition. Discs play perfect. Episodes are really good! Stand out episodes include the thrilling Castrovalva, mysterious whodunnit Black Orchid, and the haunting Earthshock. Personally I love Davison, he’s the 80s answer to Matt Smith. Charming and good looking, athletic and adventurous, but can be serious when he has to. The trio of aristocrat Nyssa, mouth on legs Tegan Jovanka and boy genius Adric compliment Davison’s positive Doctor perfectly. Overall a great first season for a great follow up to the brilliant Tom Baker.

It’s worth it even if you have them on DVD
Not my favorite Doctor, but these stories are great and the blu-Ray makes them look and sound even better. Some of the bonus features seem like filler, and Behind the Sofa could be better edited, but overall this is a vast improvement on the existing DVDs, and they were fine at the time. Plus they save space on the shelf!

Peter Davison is the Dish of the Day
One of the fascinating results of the Time Lords' regeneration process--a brilliant move that saved the series by allowing different actors to play the same role--is the startling switch from one personality to another in the same mind. The irascible first Doctor became the Goofy second, and the dapper third became the wild-eyed fourth. When Peter Davison (whom I knew as the sweet and hapless Tristan on All Creatures Great and Small and later The Dish of The Day in The Restaurant At the End of the Universe) replaced Tom Baker, it was like the hipsters of my generation evolving into the Flower Children that followed them. Peter Davison's Doctor was open and generous and amazingly tolerant of a clutch of exasperating companions. In this box there are one or two stories that suffer from cheap special effects and laughable monsters, but there are a number of respectable science-fiction tales. In buying this, I happily paid for five stories I already had just to get the other two, which were becoming very expensive on this side of The Pond, and to get my hands on the Blu-ray technology and the plethora of BBC extras--not to mention the fact that I gained about two inches of shelf-space, which is nothing to sneeze at when you are collecting the entire Doctor Who corpus. A tip: Before watching each story, check out the special features on the disc and switch on the updated CGI effects, unless you really enjoy the unintentional humour.
