You can use it vertically only if it's wedged against the light. The phone, vertical or horizontal, does NOT fit inside the right elevated as it's shown in the image.

How do I get the phone holder to hold my iphone securely without wobbling around?

There are two thumb wheels on the ball head, one screws down to tighten it to the light frame, the other screws up to tighten it to the phone holder. There's also a thumb screw on the ball head that tighten to secure the post that goes to the phone holder so that it doesn't move around. That was a little hard for me to get tight enough.
