You need to use the AC adapter that should have been supplied with the decoration, and then slide the switch on the rear of the base to turn it on. If you don't want to use the AC adapter, then you can unscrew the battery cover plate base, install batteries, and then operate the switch on the rear of the base. One position on the switch should light all the lamps, make the trains move, move Santa and the reindeer around the top, and play the Christmas tunes. The other position does all the preceding, except play the music. Hope that helps.

Are replacement adapters available for purchase? Mine doesn’t work, nor does the piece work with batteries. Replacement universal adapter did not work

I'm not sure. One thing I am sure about is that this thing is a piece of junk. It worked for 2 Christmases and then it stopped working. It would come on maybe once a day if we were lucky. Beautiful piece but terrible construction. We don't even put it out anymore. It's not very pretty just sitting there with no lights or sounds. Customer service says they only warranty it for 30 days and that's about how long it works. Will never order from Bradford Exchange again.
