A big fail with a gsd
If you have a super smart dog, this is a waste of your money. My German shepherd figured out how to remove the white disc and play with it like a frisbee in less than an hour. That actually made more of a mess than our old, normal water bowl. Sigh.

Review updated to 4 stars for the replacement bowl - and 5 stars for the seller
The bowl I received had a very bad smell, as mentioned in a couple of other reviews. I contacted the owners by email and received a brief response. Despite their asking if there was anything they could do to make my experience better, their email gave me the impression they were claiming that they hadn't had anyone mention a problem with a bad odor. I wrote my initial review, earlier today, based on that interpretation. It is a Sunday, and I received a call from one of the owners after posting my review. He wanted to discuss the product because he could tell from my review that I was very unhappy with their product. During that discussion, he asked if the bowl was packaged in a bag and then placed in the box, which it was. He explained that indicates it was a bowl sent to Amazon prior to the change they made to resolve the issue with the smell. He clarified his email response for me - he hadn't had anyone mention the smell since the change in their manufacturing process. He was obviously very concerned about my satisfaction, and volunteered to send me a new bowl. The bowl sounds great in theory and with some design changes could be a 5 star product if it really did cut down on the water I have to clean up each time my sloppy dog drinks. I'm looking forward to receiving the replacement bowl so I can find out. The owner explained that one of the design changes I mentioned in my earlier review, the small plug in the side of the white disk which allowed water to enter the disk, was so you could fill the disk with water and freeze it, making the water colder for your pet. They reacted to a concern about not being able to easily remove any water that was in the disk from someone who purchased the bowl, and future bowls will not have a plug.I also thought the black plastic base seemed chintzy and ill-fitting. There is a circular rim on the top side of the base and two circular rims on the bottom of the bowl. The bowl moves around quite a bit on the base and seems a little hard to get balanced on it, so I thought maybe they were supposed to snap together. According to the owner's email response they aren't. With the bowl being wobbly, I was worried that if my dog knocked it loose I could have an even worse water spill, and if it came completely off the base I'd have the risk of the rough edges on the bottom edge of the bowl scratching my just-installed laminate floor. Maybe if the rims were a little longer? taller? it would make it more steady, or possibly if there was less space between the two rims on the bowl it wouldn't wobble so much.My review has been upgraded to a two-star review, and I am hoping to need to edit the review again and give more stars after I receive and try the replacement. Customer service is very important to me and this owner has proven to be very concerned with customer satisfaction. He called to discuss this by phone, offered to send a replacement and never once asked me to change my review. Combined with finding out that they have made changes in the past based on customer recommendations, and that a future change will also be made based on customer recommendations, I am very impressed with their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.Update after receiving a replacement:My review has been upgraded to 4 stars after receiving a replacement.I just received the replacement bowl. While there are a few things that I think could be changed to make the bowl even better, the bowl is definitely helping the problem of my dog dripping water all over my new floor. If you order this bowl, and get a bowl that is packaged in a clear plastic bag inside the box, it is an older version of the bowl made before the seller changed the manufacturing process to resolve an issue with some of the bowls having a very strong, unpleasant smell. Amazon shipped me one of the older bowls, the bowl had what another reviewer referred to as a toxic smell, and my initial rating was very low. After the seller contacted me to discuss my earlier review and see if there was anything they could do to make my experience better, I was sent a new bowl. It came boxed without the plastic bag and did not have the strong unpleasant odor the first bowl had. My Australian shepherd/border collie mix adapted to the bowl very quickly and was soon licking the water instead of gulping it like she usually did. And each time she has used the bowl I notice little or no water on my floor instead of her dripping water through the kitchen and into the living room. I’ve even noticed two of my three cats drinking from the bowl. This is good news, as one of those cats usually dips his paw in the water bowl and then licks the water off his foot leaving anything that had been on the bottom of his foot floating in the bowl.In addition to showing obvious concern for customer satisfaction once the bowl has been received, the seller has also changed the manufacturing process at least twice based on customer comments. I’m hoping at some point in time the blue bowl will have a flat rim on its bottom that would be wide enough to use self-stick felt on the bottom of the bowl and not use the black non-scratch base, which I find ill-fitting. It looks like making the circular rim on the black base longer, and the two circular rims on the bottom of the bowl longer and closer together might stop some of the wobbly feel when the blue bowl is sitting on the black plastic base. And while I’m guessing having cutouts on two sides of the bowl is to allow both right-handed and left-handed individuals to more easily pick up the bowl, I noticed that my dog seemed to think they were there for her to use to pick up the bowl in her teeth. Having only one cutout would make it easier to have the cutout turned away from the dog. I’m glad the seller insisted on sending me a new bowl. I had been really curious to see if the style of this bowl would help the dripping water problem, but I was afraid to give my dog water out of the smelly bowl. It’s great to find out that it does cut down on the dripping water tremendously.I’m now rating this 4 stars because the product really works. And I really appreciate the obvious concern the seller had for my satisfaction!

Not Effective for "Face-First" Drinkers
I think this product's effectiveness depends on how your dog drinks. If your dog drinks "tongue first" this bowl will work for you. It doesn't work if you have a dog that drinks "face first."I have an Olde English Bulldogge - when he drinks, he pushes his face into the bowl, soaking his mouth/lips. The water then drips all over - Mess! Mess! Mess!Based on how my bulldog drinks, this bowl has two fatal flaws:1. When my dog pushes his face in, his face presses against the front part of the floating disk. This makes the floating disk tilt a bit. The water in the bowl is then pushed up and splashes onto my floor. Huge mess! This happened whenever I had the bowl more than 1/4 full (directions say to fill 2/3 full). If I only kept it 1/4 full I'd have to refill it constantly.2. When my dog pushes his face in, the floating disk dunks down and the top of the container fills with water. His face gets just as soaked as it did before.I have used the Slopper Stopper and it works better (it stops him from being able to push his face into the bowl). I'd recommend that if you have a face-first drinker like I do. I just wish it was easier to clean/stainless.If you have a "tongue first" drinker - this bowl could be perfect for you. It just doesn't work for "face-first" drinkers.

Tiny bowl, big results
This bowl was purchased in a state of desperation due to my 1 year old German Shepherd’s insanely messy drinking habits. We have wood floors throughout the house (including in the kitchen) and I was worried they were going to be destroyed - he never swallowed his last gulp of water and just left gross trails of water throughout the house.Pros:- Most importantly, it DOES work. I immediately noticed a sharp decrease in the number of puddles on my kitchen floors. I have not had to mop up water once today (usually this was a 3-4 time per day task).- There doesn’t seem to be much of a learning curve for the dogs. I have three large dogs of varying ages and levels of intelligence and all three were able to figure out how to use this bowl within five minutes.Cons:- Size. It’s very small. If you have larger dogs or multiple dogs, you’ll probably need more than one. I wish this came in a larger size. The photo I attached shows the bowl next to a “medium sized” regular water bowl.- It’s loud. The plastic disc bangs around inside the bowl while your dog drinks.- If your dog is one of those dogs that puts their feet in their water bowl (like my Husky does) they WILL flip the disc out of the bowl; the disc then becomes a frisbee.- While all three of my dogs were able to figure out how to use this bowl, only one of them seems to *like* using it. Luckily for me, the one who likes it is the messy drinker so I’m not too bothered to leave a normal bowl out for the other two - but it bears noting that not all dogs will necessarily want to use this kind of bowl.
