World Heritage Sites: A Complete Guide to 936 UNESCO World Heritage Sites Paperback – August 23, 2012

This guide should inspire you visit all these wonderful places or at least put them on your dream bucket list. Alternatively, the book could be a bible or dictionary by providing useful information for each site. Unfortunately, this books falls short, it reads and feels like being provided by an government organization.On the plus side, the guide lists all sites, provides great pictures, and some maps to easily locate the sites. Two decisions by the publisher, however, make this book a bit cumbersome to read. First, all sites are organized based on the year when the status of UNESCO Heritage site was conferred such that sites of the same country are distributed throughout the book....but who cares about when the Historic Centre of Salzburg was made UNESCO World Heritage site? I would like to see either all sites from the same country grouped together in one chapter, or all sites of similar type (e.g., ancients cities, natural phenomenon) grouped by some kind of logical bundling that makes scrolling through the thick book fun and entertaining. Second, the descriptions of the sites vary in quality and depth: sure, this cannot be totally avoided given how many sites there are, but somehow many descriptions did not make the sites come to life or were convincing about the importance of the site. Finally, while I understand that everybody can just go search online for any site to get more information, it would be helpful if an appendix would list the official websites for all sites, just to make it easy to get started on exploring more.In sum, the book is gives you an overview over all sites, but not much more.

The UNESCO World Heritage List is an ambitious plan to preserve natural environments and places and architecture of human significance. This book is a great overview of 936 sites, although more are added every year so it is not complete, as it was published in 2011. I hope that UNESCO continues to publish new versions and that each one contains all of them up to date. My goal is to see as many sites as I can. It is a lifelong project!

I first bought this book to try to keep track of the Unesco sites I visited. After receiving the book I found it is really helpful to locate the sites in the Cities I will be visiting, so as not to miss those sites. While looking through the book I realized I had been in places and did not see the UNESCO site in those cities.

We travel a bit and like to check if any of these sites are in the Countries we go to. After we purchased the book we have been checking off the ones we went to. The descriptions of each one are accurate and helpful to aid our travels.

Most sites are about a half to a third a page, and offer good, preliminary information.The sites are listed in chronological order, rather than alphabetically or by location, which I don't like.

We are really enjoying this book, but then we're big fans of World Heritage Sites and have been to many. We're savoring each page, checking off the sites we've been to and making note of the ones we hope we can eventually visit in the future. Beautiful pictures.

I had no idea that there are some many UNESCO world heritage sites and find the book somewhat overwhelming but I am glad it is part of my collection!

I enjoy reading about locations around the world, and this book not only gives a description, but, in most cases, includes a picture. They also list sites by their admission into UNESCO. The appendix gives a list of sites by country, and the index lists them alphabetically.

I'm a bit of a history geek. I like this book & enjoyed reading it. May be they can make another edition with more pictures & a bit more history behind the sites.

It's a book that you can pick up for 5 minutes at a time, if you wish. A treasur trove of information!
