I have ordered this and the reel is not plastic. It actually seems to be a good product. I have not had the chance to use it yet though.

How many ball bearings does the reel have

I have no idea as you can't open the rod to see. I can say I love this reel- i have used it for two summers now fishing at the beach- the convenience of having a reel I can carry with me when on vacation has been perfect!
