The Student's English-Sanskrit Dictionary (Hardcover)

Good Dictionary - Serves its purpose
Its a nice dictionary. If you have an english text that you want to translate to Sanskrit - this book might be a very valuable resource for that.HOWEVER, keep in mind that this is 'English - Sanskrit' dictionary. It has words in English, and definitions/same meaning words in Sanskrit. Maybe, what you are looking for is a 'Sanskrit - English' dictionary. The same author also has that dictionary and I'm sure it's good.

Poor printing quality
The printing quality is so poor that many pages are unreadable making this dictionary largely useless. If you are looking for an English-Sanskrit dictionary it is best to look elsewhere.

One of the first English-Sanskrit dictionary
This is one of the very first English-Sanskrit dictionary. It is written a century years back. Still it is quite useful. Now newer words and technology in vogue means you need another similar dictionary to go hands in hand with this one. This is still a good dictionary to have for somewhat serious contemporary students and enthusiasts of Sanskrit.

is good. However
What there is in the book, is good. However, could have been more exhaustive to deserve a higher rating. Useful a quick source for common needs.

One Star
Not at all what I was hoping for. Pooly printed. No translitterations.

Readable
Unlike the other publications of this same book, the publisher has a better font and both Devanagiri script and English words are readable. This book is really handy for any student of Sanskrit. It is also a great reference for the experienced. So far, able to find the Sanskrit words for all the english words I wanted to.

Mostly successful so far
Since my memory is not so brilliant these days, I wanted this book principally to look up those spiritual terms which I knew I had encountered but could not remember. Having used it now a number of times, I reckon the success rate is probably around 80%. The failures may, however, be my own fault! The book is clearly aimed at students studying the language and contains such distinctly unspiritual words as 'telephone' and 'electric'. This means that there are very many words that are not relevant to my purpose and whose presence is likely to create a 'wood for trees' effect. Also, the quality of printing is not always perfect. Apart from that, it serves the purpose well!Dennis Waite, author of Back to the Truth: 5000 years of Advaita
