Q: Is the hose made in the usa?

No, it is made in China. Surprisingly though it is a good quality.

Q: Will this reel work with a 50 foot hose if I install my own?

I did a quick calculation for you based on the room left on the reel I own. I chose 13" as the diameter (the reel has a 14" OD). There is about 1" of space left on the reel so you can get 2 more layers. Realistically you can get 3 rows across. The calculation says you can get another 20' on the reel but I think you would have a lot of headaches with the hose jumping off the reel as it got full. You could add maybe an inch more to the outer edge of the reel with some sort of shop made extension to the rim diameter. I just looked and there is a 50 footer used reel in original packaging for a bit over $100 that would probably be a better choice.
