particularly the over emphasis on the Canadian Indian part of the novel which at times became tedious. Despite the comments abov
I first read this book in 1973 in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. I was a member of the regional Censor Boerd and it was banned as being obscene. Now, more than 40 years later, my views are ambivalent. The story is told in a stream of consciousness style , reminiscent of James Joyce. Research shows that the author was under the influence of amphetamines for most of the time when writing, which possibly explains the fragmented and almost manic style. It was a challenge at times to read through to the end, particularly the over emphasis on the Canadian Indian part of the novel which at times became tedious.Despite the comments above, I believe that the book was a product of its era, the social unrest and questioning of traditional values of the Author's generation, and for that reason, I would recommend reading it.Of course, the Author's real success lis in his concentration on poetry, lyrics and music.

Leonard Cohen does what no author has done before, and none would attempt to do now
One of the strangest and most convoluted pieces of literature I've ever read. Sexual, shocking, vulgar, and above all, thought provoking. It's a book riddled with brilliant philosophy tied in to a questionable dark comedy. Though the B-plot is underwhelming and devoid of anything significant beyond subtle tie ins to the A-plot, the book holds up. It's not for everyone (Weak stomachs steer clear) but it's certainly a must read for anybody looking for a unique and ambitious ride of psychedelics and unexplainably brilliant philosophical points.

A book that never will die on a shelf. Read it over and over and pass in on!!
I read this years ago but got it to reread it. It was superb this time as it was years ago. I would say this is probably the best novel I ever read!! I have grown old with Leonard Cohen and now that heβs died (2016) this is a wonderful book that I can pass onto my children. Well worth reading over and over. Brilliant as Boston Herald called it.

A Cosmically Joyous Read
Reader beware! You have probably never read anything like this (even if you have). For the self-aware, it will delight you as it enlightens you. For the yet obtuse, steer clear of the horrific accounts of mundane and base humanity. It's one of the best books ever written and should be burned in the south, praised in the west, and yawned over in the east. God bless this man by giving him the life He did and letting us reap in his few words.

Cohen reveals all in short book.
This little book is full of surprises and wonderful content. One learns more about Cohen's bi-sexuality. One scene involves a crazed drive through the Canadian backlands to reach an urgent destination.Without spoiling it, you'll find driving has a sexual side too. Reading it is like a time travel to the 50' and 60's. I have read it in fits and starts.

Muddled characters
I've been on a Leonard Cohen kick and like his songs a lot better than this early novel. I'm amazed so many people apparently got through the book.

A Look Into an Era Through Cohen's Soul
The only book I know that truly depicts the psychedelic era from a first person experience. Makes Ken Kesey's stuff look like a walk in the park.

Very strange, and not terribly readable.
I love Leonard Cohen. His songs are among the most beautiful and inspirational I've ever heard. But after about 4 months, I'm only about 80 pages into the book. It just doesn't do it for me. I'd like to read The Favorite Game. I've heard there's an actual storyline. But it's not yet on kindle.

Unless you are a huge Cohen fan, probably give it a miss
I am not a massive Leonard Cohen fan, but nevertheless I was intrigued when this came up as a possible suggestion for our book club to read. I am so glad we didn't choose it. I thought it might be interesting, even vaguely erotic, but it was just drivel. Tried to persevere, but it has joined the rare club of books I have started to read and just couldn't be bothered to finish, which happens very rarely for me. I can only imagine that if you were a big fan of the singer and his work you would want to read this to complete your knowledge of the man, but I honestly can't think of another reason why you would bother.
