A delight to read .

Nice collection. However actual printed price itself is 50

First of all, I got the wrong book when I first got the book, then I had to exchange it which took 5 days extra. THen when I actually saw the book its size was much smaller than I expected, the book is really thin with merely 50 pages and the length of the book it not more than a normal hand. So only if you're interested in buying and reading a short story then buy this book or else it would be a waste of money. Other than that the print of the book is fine.

These three short stories show why Steinbeck is such a great writer. Each of these stories depicts a scene, creates an atmosphere and somehow says more by the way he uses words than the words themselves.If that doesn't seem to make sense, take a closer look. The first of the stories, 'The Vigilante' is, at first sight, about mob violence, about the lynching of a black man by a white mob. It doesn't even start until the thing is over. But in the conversations afterwards it shows much more than it tells. For example, without addressing the issue directly, we learn how local politics and self-interest are complicit in the killing.But even more deeply, it shows us the real reasons why these things happen. Nothing to do with the rights or wrongs of it, but down to the deepest and darkest urges that can exist in the human soul.Likewise, The Snake dissects the difference between scientific observation and voyeurism: whilst also arousinging a subtle feeling of horror - and doing it much better than most 'horror' stories can manage.And 'The Chrysanthemums' shows us a women who could be and do so much more, but her great talent is restricted to growing flowers - and even those are not valued as they should be.Steinbeck is not only a master of words, but a masterful observer of human life. These short stories are a demonstration of what writing can do and what it can be.

Libro interessante, composto da tre brevi racconti separati.

Love all these gems in the collection. Most I have read before... but long ago.

I was not very aware of Steinbeck's short fiction until I came across this book. I was highly impressed with the stories contained within. The book provides an excellent read for quiet moments when you can read a story in ten minutes.
