Great for Old West fans .
This book was a much quicker read than I thought it'd be. It tells of the stories of some of the famous , less famous , and totally unknown people who died either on their way out West, or during their life out there .A lot of people died on the trip out through the rugged territory, either from disease , injury or violence . A lot of little kids died by falling into the campfires or over the sides of cliffs, etc .The book tells of a bit of those sorts of deaths, then of some of the lawmen, lawless, showgirls, cowboys , etc that lived out in some of the towns .Where there were pictures of the people available , a few were show, as were some pictures of the gravestones , or what's left of the wooden markers on the graves .An interesting little book if you like reading about the Old West .

A Book for Cemetery Connoisseurs
Cemeteries are interesting places to visit and each headstone involves a life with a story to tell. Author Chris Enss has written brief a brief biography of old western characters many of which are familiar to most people and others are obscure but still having an interesting tale worthy of inclusion in the book. I found a quote of Bat Masterson to be especially interesting which read, "There are many in this old world of ours who hold that things break about even for all of us. I have observed, for example, that we all get the same amount of ice. The rich get it in the summertime and the poor get it in the winter." If you enjoy prowling cemeteries this book should interest you.

Surprisingly Well Written!
Expecting one of those cute, whimsical books full of fluff, I was wonderfully surprised with the content! Stories were short, easily read & gave synopses of each memorable character, such as Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill Cody & Annie Oakley, to name just a few! It was obvious Ms Enss did some research for each person as to their place in history. There is the cause of death, what their tombstone reads, & where they are buried, in case you would like to visit & pay your last respects! I really enjoyed it as respite now & then from the heavier reading I was trying to get through!

Tales behine the tombsones
The book is well written but reveals little new information, but this is hard to do since virtually every outlaw - lawman has been covered extensively in books and magazines over the year. The Bob Ford piece lacks the interesting and gory details of his final moments in Creede, but otherwise, the stories I am familiar with are complete. This is an interesting read because of the subjects the author selected, the great photographs and well worth the money.

Interesting and entertaining
I had heard of some of these people, but others were new to me. All had interesting tales to tell and the author's style made for enjoyable reading. I would recommend it for anyone interested in exploring the human aspects of history.

... picked up about halfway through so it wasn't as dull as it started out
Truthfully I would have given it a half star less but it finally picked up about halfway through so it wasn't as dull as it started out. This book has a split personality and is either copied from old newspapers, old history books or the author listened to some old timer's memories and wrote them as spoken. Personally, I think he copied partly from old boring books with bad information, but this is just my opinionThat said the book gets more interesting between a third and halfway through. At least the writing does. But being a history buff I can tell you that most of what is written is pure bunk. It is contrary to the better historians and official information about many of the people listed....from their looks to their lives to their deaths.Personally, it is a waste of your time and money to read this book. As my daddy use to say, it wouldn't even make good toilet paper......but since I read the ebook version, that goes without saying
