Textile Landscape: Painting with Cloth in Mixed Media

A beautiful visual journey.
The first thing you’ll notice is the texture of the cover. It feels like cloth. It’s beautiful. My advice is to first just page through the entire book and just soak in the visual aspects of the photograhs. They are a fabulous representation of textile art. Then go back through again and read the details about each photograh. Then delve into the text. You’ll notice that the “how to” sections like screen printing, for example, have intructions and suggestions listed. There are not a bunch of photos showing each step so from that standpoint it’s not an instruction manual. But there’s plenty of written instruction. Holmes’ descriptions of her own creative processes and those of other artists are fascinating, well written and readable. Even if you never actually do any of the art techniques, this book is a great addition to any crafting library. Enjoy!!

Another great book from Batsford
This isn't really a "how to" book. It isn't simply eye candy either. It's a generous look into this artist's process. Her observations and treatment of landscapes are superb. I recommend this book for textile and mixed-media artists. The binding and paper are beautiful, photographs and text are clear. The text is inspirational. I admit that I am biased. I am a Batsford fan!

Great Eye Candy - Not many instructions
Loved the photography! The eye candy is beautiful!HOWEVERI want to learn the process. There are a few instructions, but not step by step like you would expect. Not sure if I'm going to keep this or not.

Trip for the imagination, treat for the eye.
The book is so well presented, beautifully illustrated. A real treat for the eyes and the imagination. Explaining the different forms of printmaking, how to apply these to cloth, utilizing different mediums that are “cloth” friendly. Pretreatments are explained and how to apply, easy to understand. With the different art featured with each design element , holds my interest and makes me want to work through the book, page by page. Well done, and worth every penny.

Grounded in Color
This book has lively text and excellent inspirational photos for moving from the landscape to textile. Good use of color and stitch. A number of artists are included so that many styles and techniques are illustrated. A solid buy!

Fine examples of remarkable works
As an art quilter I am drawn to mixed media and landscapes. This book has unique perspectives and wonderful examples from multiple artists. Well written and helpful for ‘pushing the boundaries’.

Disappointed!
Regurgitated techniques so there was nothing new there. Not enough of Cas Holmes work and too much of other artists work which was so dissimilar from her work that it had no relevance. I was so looking forward to this book being released and it has been a waste of money

This book is amazing!!!
I bought this book before I even took a class with Cas. She is such a talented artist and tutor. This book is everything I hoped it would be. Intelligent thought processes, well laid out. and the art work is phenomenal I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in textiles or landscape or even if you collect beautiful books.

A Different Approach to Landscape
Bought this as soon as it came out and have used it quite a bit. As well as textile artists, It would be great for painters who want to look at things in a different way. One of the strengths of the book is that Holmes talks about how she personally reacts to landscapes and begins to assemble her work. I could look at this book all day long, but thankfully it has also inspired me to produce some work that reflects the cityscape I am in now. There are a few techniques given in the book, but with not too many details. This is a book to inspire you to do it yourself!

Gorgeous book
This is a truly beautiful book. The cloth cover is exquisite and the contents superb. I look through it again and again and the observations, information and guidance contained within are well worth reading. Whilst there are works of other artists featured in the book, there are plenty of examples of Cas Holmes work - which is what particularly interests me - I am so glad I decided to buy this book, it will always be treasured.

What a wonderful experience, both to read, look at and follow.
I like photography but recently I have become interested in branching out into mixed media projects. I have some Indian block prints and paints, a sewing machine, and fabric I can print on (both photos and blocks), and I want to experiment with combining all these mediums. This book has given me a lot of ideas and food for thought. bring on the snow weather when I can hunker down and get going! I highly recommend this book.
