The covered mug maintains temperature and prevents spills. I pre-warm the cup with hot water - which may not be necessary - and my coffee makes it up two flights of steps to my office without spilling AND it stays hot for quite awhile. Seems to work well.

The mug is great, keeps stuff cold or hot for hours, it's confortable in the hand and good-looking. However the lid leaks a lot from the sliding opening on the top, the round seal is very good at sealing but the top opening it's just flimsy and leaky.
