Invasion of the Body Snatchers

This is one of my all-time favorites. I was happy to see it was formatted to fill my TV screen, unlike many older movies.

What a great scary movie a classic

**Some Spoilers***Some Spoilers**The movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a very unique movie by historical context standards because the movie itself lets us peer backwards into the early cold war era and lets us view the mindset of the people during that time, which is obviously abundant throughout the movie. It shows us how an invisible enemy, the pod people, try to take over normal everyday American people (like the communist) and bring them into the fold. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a movie about a doctor of medicine that slowly sees the townspeople around him change into other people and while they still look the same, something is quite different about them. The doctor is told by some of his patients that this is happening to their loved ones, but he is quick to point these symptoms as stress, and other psychological factors that represent a misunderstanding of the patients that bring the news to him. It doesn't take long however until the good doctor realizes that the people are not delusional and that the town is actually being taken over by a malevolent force, that is invisible, can't readily be seen, and is trying to change the townspeople to becoming one of them; of course this happens when they fall asleep. In a climatic finally where he has even lost his girlfriend to them and is trying to convince other doctors and authorities that he is not insane, news of a wreck comes in detailing the pods, and he is finally believed and the authorities rush in. Now whether the writers, producers and directors actually intended for the similarities between the pod people and communist remains to be seen, however as we look back upon the area as historians we can't help but see such blatant similarities between the two factions. Such likeness entails an invisible type of enemy that wants to change you and make you part of them. They don't like truth, glory, the American way or mom's apple pie. They are cold, emotionless and uncaring (as far as stereotypes go), and want to take over every facet of life that you experience. As we can see in the film the pod people take you over while you sleep, and make you one of them. This action is akin to saying that American's must stay awake, be alert, ever vigilant and watchful, lest you be taken in the dead of night unaware and become one of them, following their ways, to not fall asleep and wake finding yourself and everyone around you changed, in the movie into pod people, in reality into communist. This is repeated throughout the movie, and is a message that rings loud and clear; keep vigilant or suffer the consequences. Further still we can see in the movie that the federal government is the only one that we can count on to save us. Local authorities have been taken over (subverted to the communism cause) by the pod people and have joined the cause of stopping word from reaching outside ears before their plans come to fruition. The first people that the doctor tries to contact is the FBI, a federal investigative branch of the United States, and the pod people stopped him from contacting them or any other upper level government agency. This was due to the fact that it portrays that American federal government can stop the threat, and idea perpetrated by the doctor and upheld by the pod people the fact they stopped the communication. The pod people, like the communist look like us, sound like us, and imitate us, but they are not us, they are as alien as the pod people, who came from far far away, from outer space, a place we know little about, though this could have connotations as well as a prelude to the space race, and how the soviet Union and America fought to be the first nation on the moon. These points out the argument that the ideals of communist are as alien to us as the pod people would be and that these alien influences can serve no good purpose to an American that is in love, feels emotion, and takes American values to heart. Much like they lost these items when they became pod people, so would they also lose them if they became communist. As we look back at the movie and know what we now know we can dissect the movie in this way and make comparisons as such that has previously been asserted, however whether they were intentional at the time remains to be seen. All in all this is an excellent movie...the original invasion of the body snatchers thaat has spawned a host of remakes and genre movies just like it over the years. A fine movie and excellent purchase from amazon. No horror collection is complete without this.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is one of my all time favorite Horror, Sci-Fi pictures of all time and one of the best of the genre from the 50s. I just love the concept of the movie and everything here works to near perfection. While not as scary or suspenseful today as it once was, Invasion of the Body Snatchers actually holds up rather well and while dated in spots again holds up rather well overall.The screenplay by Daniel Mainwarning is rock solid with a great bunch of characters; I really liked all the characters and the two leads were excellent. The script has some good light moments and delivers with the chills.Director Don Siegel who's done such classics as Dirty Harry and The Shootist delivers another classic here. His scenes are well paced and at times chilling. While there are some moments that are a bit slow but never boring. Siegel creates some excellent atmosphere and tension right off the bat and is mostly able to sustain that through out the picture with the exception of a scene or two.Kevin McCarthy plays Dr. Miles Bennell and is one of my all time favorite characters. McCarthy is brilliant and brings a lot of depth to the character and is a hero you can totally root for. Dana Wynter as Becky Driscoll is excellent as the love interest. Both these characters are two of my favorite film characters of all time.Invasion of the Body Snatchers would be remade 3 times; first in 1978 under the same title than in 93 as Body Snatchers and again in 2007 as The Invasion. Of all the versions I'd say the 78 remake was the best. As great as the original is the remake is one of the few times a remake expands slightly on the original. While the 56 version is loaded with suspense and tension, the remake actually ups the ante on that and really expands on the concept. But I would still highly recommend the original since it really is just as good.Invasion of the Body Snatchers is of course based on the popular novel of the same name written by Jack Finney. While the novel is excellent the movie expands on the concept and makes it a bit better. This is probably the best Horror, Sci-Fi movie of the 1950s, which produced many classics. In general a lot of 50s horror is now a bit campy and I mean that in a good way. While there are some campy moments here it mostly works on a very serious level.The final moments of the movie are pure brilliance with Miles running down the highway shouting they're here, they're here; you're next! It's actually quite chilling.Like I stated earlier I just love the concept for this movie and I'll admit I have enjoyed all 4 film versions as well as the novel. While I would give the edge to the 78 version, the original is still a masterpiece of filmmaking and one of my all time favorites. I'd highly recommend doing a double feature with the 56 & 78 versions for a great and chilling night.

This is one of the greatest movies ever and I feel like today in 2023 with everything going on I’m living out this plot

Esta película de 1956, es un clásico del terror. Sin grandes efectos especiales, se puede sentir la atmósfera de tensión y terror al saber que los humanos están siendo desplazados por unas réplicas idénticas que emergen de unas vainas vegetales provenientes de algún lugar del universo que llegaron a la tierra en forma de semillas y que germinaron dando lugar a vegetales con vainas donde se generan los clones, réplicas, etc., (Panspermia dirigida ?). No muestran sentimientos, ni emoción alguna. Son fríos y sin metas por seguir mas que sobrevivir en un mundo calmo y sin problemas. Una película clásica única que enerva.

Un bluray carente de extras pero con una calidad de imagen aceptable de este clásico de cine de terror. Muy recomendable.

Nach klassischer Lesart hat der Film eigentlich zwei sich ausschließende allegorische Bedeutungsebenen:(1) Außerirdische = Metapher für Kommunisten = MOTTO: Die (äußere) Bedrohung kann jederzeit eintreten und muss mit allen Mitteln bekämpft werden.(2) Außerirdische = Metapher für uns Normalsterbliche, die nicht wirklich richtig leben = MOTTO: Die (innere) Bedrohung ist die eigentliche, denn bevor wir sie bekämpfen können, müssen wir sie erst bemerken. Wenn sie erkannt wurde, muss sie mit allen Mitteln bekämpft werden.Die 2. Lesart wird gestützt durch Don Siegels Aussage zu seinem Film:"Ich habe wirklich das Gefühl, dass die meisten Leute Pods sind. Sie wachen am Morgen auf, und sie haben einen Arbeitsplatz. Sie frühstücken also, und dann gehen sie an die Arbeit, und sie kommen heim und essen zu Abend, und dann schauen sie ins TV und gehen ins Bett. Und das ihr ganzes Leben. Am nächsten Morgen wachen sie wieder auf, und alles beginnt von neuem. Sie haben keine Träume. Sie haben kein wirkliches Gefühl der Liebe. Sie fühlen überhaupt nichts. Es ist, denke ich, ein wichtiger Film. Aber ich habe mich nicht für seine politischen Aspekte interessiert. Ich wollte nicht zeigen, dass wir von einer unterirdischen Macht bedroht sind, egal ob kommunistischer oder faschistischer Art, auch wenn über diese mögliche Interpretation des Films eine Menge Artikel veröffentlicht worden sind. In Wirklichkeit hat der Film mehr mit den Erfahrungen mit Leuten zu tun, mit denen ich ständig Kontakt hatte. Ich glaube, da hat sich nichts geändert. Die Pods sind immer noch da und bleiben auch da. Und Stück für Stück erobern sie die Welt."Gute Kunstwerke lassen immer mehrere Deutungen zu, auch solche, die über die ursprünglichen Absichten seiner Schöpfer hinausgehen, ja, diese unter Umständen sogar überdecken oder in eine unerwartete Richtung erweitern. Unter der Voraussetzung, dass Interpretationen auf den Grund des Kunstwerks selbst zurückgehen, und nicht etwa künstlich hineinimplementiert werden, kann es durch eine solche Vorgehensweise nur gewinnen. Die Qualität von "Die Dämonischen" eröffnet durchaus noch weitergehende Interpretations-Spielräume, und das ohne ideologische (oder andere) Verrenkungen.Neben dem allegorischen Geschehen transportiert der Film unterschwellig doch etwas Anderes: Bedrohungsängste sind es, um die es hier geht! Bedrohungsängste verdichten die Handlung zu einem einzigartigen hysterischen Schwebezustand. Indem der Film die virulenten Bedrohungsängste seiner Zuschauer aufgreift und mit ihnen spielt, verstärkt er sie. Die Ängste der Zuschauer werden auf die Ängste der Protagonisten zurück gespiegelt - und umgekehrt.Menschen an der Grenze zur Paranoia treiben die Handlung und lösen unweigerlich beunruhigende Resonanzen aus. Und genau das scheint mir das eigentliche Agens von "Die Dämonischen" zu sein. Dieses Wirkungsmoment reicht weit über die vordergründigen allegorischen Bedeutungsebenen (siehe oben) hinaus. Und, en passant, bei tiefergehender Analyse: - Ist es nicht jene Atmosphäre der unwägbaren, latenten Bedrohung, was sein "inneres Betriebsgeheimnis" ausmacht? Wenn man sich hierauf verständigen könnte, wäre es nur nahe liegend, "Die Dämonischen" auch als Spiegel für die Atmosphäre der damaligen US-Gesellschaft zu sehen. Der Film bietet damit einen entlarvenden Blick in die Psyche einer ganzen Nation in einer spezifischen Situation (McCarthy-Ära), wenn vielleicht auch unbeabsichtigt. Einfach großartig, wie hier eine bestimmte Zeitstimmung genau eingefangen und glaubwürdig verdichtet wird. (Ach Hollywood, warum nur schenkst du der Welt heute solche Filme nicht mehr?!)Gewiss: "Die Dämonischen" weist einige Schwachpunkte im Drehbuch und auch echte handwerkliche Schnitzer auf. So lässt sich der logische Bruch kurz vor dem Ende des Films nicht wegdiskutieren: Die für die Figur Mary bestimmte Bohne befand sich offensichtlich nicht einmal in der Nähe des Stollens, wo die beiden Unterschlupf gefunden hatten. Dennoch wird Mary während eines sehr kurzen (!) Schlafs in ihr Alter-Ego-Alien verwandelt, was im Widerspruch zu den vorher gezeigten Abläufen steht. Mit etwas mehr Sorgfalt wäre dieser Schnitzer sicher vermeidbar gewesen.Diese Schwächen tun allerdings nichts zur Sache, denn der Film funktioniert auf der psychologischen Ebene trotzdem. (Anders gesprochen: Auch die Plots von "Casablanca" oder von "Die Spur des Falken" sollte man besser nicht auf die Goldwaage legen...) Die anderen beiden Verfilmungen des Stoffes kenne ich auch, aber diese haben mich bei weitem nicht so angesprochen wie das 1956er Original. Irgendetwas scheint dort zu fehlen, vielleicht ist es der "hysterische Schwebezustand" aus Siegels Film?FAZIT: "Die Dämonischen" bietet ein Lehrstück dafür, wie Ängste in einer Gesellschaft entstehen und diese alles andere überdecken. Man lasse sich bitte von der äußeren Form nicht täuschen: Obwohl wir vom Budget her ein B-Movie vor uns haben, ragt seine filmische Qualität deutlich über das übliche Niveau der meisten Filme dieser Art hinaus. Sein Thema ist auch nach mehr als 50 Jahren noch immer von Bedeutung. Eine zeitlose Parabel mit Nachbrenner-Qualität.
