Fiddler on the Roof: Violin and Piano

meant to buy the whole film score not just the one piece but I will enjoy playing it!

If you want to know exactly which part of the music is included in this book, search for "fiddler on the roof prologue / tradition / main title", and you can find the music on YT or Spotify, and starting from 7:45 till the end 11:20 is what's in this book.It's mostly a cadenza, so as the other review said, not much melody in the violin playing, and you can't sing along with it.On the other hand (not intentional but lol), if you like the cadenza and want to learn it, the book itself is of good value. It has stapled double-sided pages for violin+piano, 3 separate single-sided pages for violin only (9"x12" I assume), and 1 single-sided page for violin only (27"x12" I assume).

This is the transcription of the opening credits/cadenza that Isaac Stern, the master, played in the movie. It is not a watered down or simplified version. Apart from the intro and ending (which were needed to form a stand-alone piece), it is as close as one could ever get to the exact notes he played. John Williams did an excellent job. This piece is not for the faint of heart and I would categorize it as advanced. I play the violin, so I cannot speak to the difficulty of the piano accompaniment. This is a very moving solo and gives the soloist the freedom to interpret, show-off, and take the audience for a ride. Great for anyone who loves Fiddler and is up for a challenge!

It is partly my fault for not investigating further, but the description of this book implies that it is a collection of tunes from Fiddler on the Roof arranged for violin and piano. Instead, it turned out to be a freely composed fantasia. In general, Amazon descriptions do not tell us the most pertinent details.
