This book is Irie !!!
A very good book in the opinion of this reviewer. I took it with me on my trip to Jamaica recently and blew the locals away with my knowledge. I was staying at a 5-star resort which had many locals working on it as guest event coordinators. They were keen to go over the book with me. Generally speaking, Jamaican Patois is an ever-evolving "language". New words are always being added, and in some cases, replacing old words. Also, Jamaican Patois varies throughout the country. Different regions have different words. This book is great in that it gives you a word, the the definition, and then two sentences implementing the use of the word. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone traveling to Jamaica.

Useful Information
This is a unique volume that focuses on the application of the Caribbean dialect instead of just words and meanings. I believe the information is ideal for students researching idioms and for tourists wanting to recognize the general conversational language in the islands.

A little disappointed
I was a little disappointed in this book. There is actually very little usable content if like me you wanted to learn a few words to use in every day conversation.

Muddled, not well organised or academically rigorous
I bought this book, attracted by the bright cover in Jamaican colours, and the compiler's qualifications (PhD).You know what they say about judging books by their cover... This is a disappointing book that seems the product of a few disjointed recollections and reminiscences of the Jamaica the author left long ago, rather than of any serious research and study. That would be fine if it was just the glossary to a memoir, which is what it really seems like. But it is not, unfortunately, as it claims to be A-Z of Jamaican Patois. Much of it is taken up with words readily understandable to standard English speakers: dropped 'h', 'ck' for medial 'tt' in bottle, little, preference of 'd' for voiced 'th' in dem, dat etc.The search for a user-friendly dictionary of Jamaican patois continues.
