Fulfills a function that has been largely abandoned with the advent of plastic valve caps. I use them on all of our bikes. It is much easier to fix a flat when you can remove the valve to vent all of the air.

This is one of those tools that is so rarely needed until you can't find a valve core remover to pull the core for a fast inflate to seat the bead of say, your garden tractor tire.
