A ton of sociological histories would not match the sense of a changing society given by Mark Girouard's wonderful book. A pleasure to return to again and again. Plus rich illustrations. Magic.

The book is a set book for a course that I will be starting shortly. It arrived very quickly and is in excellent condition.I am very pleased with it.

Brilliant and interesting read , great for my English country house module, would recommend to anyone interested in country houses as it opens your eyes into the workings of an English country house.

A beautifully written book. Lots of interesting info on lifestyle, houses and occupants and so easy to read. Great sources listed for further study. A pleasure to read. This book arrived earlier than expected and was exactly as described.

I work in a stately home and wanted this for additional background information. I wasn't disappointed! It has plenty of photographs, loads of information set out in a clear and very readably fashion. I will be recommending it to my fellow guides and and I see a number of them looking for their own copy.
