The Nicholson rectangular hand file is 8" long, has a handle, and has one side with double-cut American pattern teeth and one side with single-cut American pattern teeth for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The double-cut teeth are for rapid material removal, and the single-cut teeth on the reverse side are for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. A handle is forged on the end of the file for secure gripping. Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I love files
Files are made in high quality steel, just have that rare hardness that you can feel, have all sorts of production marks, flame patterns from the heat treating and a new one has those sharp teeth that easily cuts into ordinary metal. They are old tech and made in proper factories with heat and noise and flames, not a sissy factory with people wearing masks lest they breath on their work. Most people now only have files in their computer, collections of magnetic nothingness that actually doesn't even exist. They would be reborn if they bought a big metal file and used it on something that does exist and will for perhaps a thousand years. This file cuts smoothly on one side, quickly and without mercy on the other. Spent metal chards fall glittering to the floor to be swept up and recycled into something useful, like a real file.
