Karin Slaughter does it again!
The best yet from Karin Slaughter. Suspenseful, great characters and even with such a dark subject, the details are so well developed it felt like a true story. Frightening and interesting at the same time.

slow at first but picks up and is compelling
This book was quite slow for the first 1/3. It felt heavy and long; the details and backstory bogged down the story. But once I got past that and into halfway through the book, I was hooked. Some parts seemed drawn out but overall it was a compelling story. It was dark and heavy and definitely a difficult topic but very well done overall.

Maybe a 3.5⭐️
My heart breaks for the Carroll Family. The betrayal, the lies, the secrets, all the horrible things. To think you know the people who welcome into your family, but really have no clue.Very much enjoyed the twists. Liked the characters. Some parts dragged on a bit. Loved when Claire went into beast mode. All in all, a decent read.

WOW! LOVED THIS STORY!
WOW. HOLY HELL. Well that was quite a ride! I finished this book late last night and I'm still shaking. I LOVED IT! Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter (omg her name even goes with this creepy as hell story!) is one of the best thrillers I've read. While I haven't read anything in this genre lately, it is one I've always enjoyed and this book came very highly recommended by a trusted friend and blogger and I just couldn't resist. The synopsis alone grabbed my attention and I couldn't wait to dive right in.I'm going to keep this review short. My head is still spinning and I just feel like you have to experience it all for yourself. But I will warn - this book is GRAPHIC! No that's an understatement; there is GRAPHIC VIOLENCE the likes of which you might find on one of the more disturbing episodes of Criminal Minds. The kind where you sort of wonder where in the world the writer actually came up with this stuff and you hope to all that is holy that there isn't actually a criminal out there with these same ideas. But, I also must say that while the overall feel of the story is kind of creepy from start to finish, the graphic details are not on every page. You could possibly (although I didn't) skim over the really bad stuff if you had to and you'd still get the idea. That being said, the storyline is original. It's creative, it's CLEVER and it's downright scary. And it feels so real; from the very first page I was hooked. There are lots of twists and turns and at one point I think I was turned upside down and held there for a while. Until I was finally able to straighten it all out. And then there were more twists. Karin Slaughter has truly done a remarkable job with this storyline and the details are just amazing. You do not want to miss a word as everything has meaning and you will question everything and everyone you encounter along the way. The characters all have very strong personalities, and give the reader a sense of who they are and what they're feeling. There's a lot of heartbreak, a lot of pain and anguish but I will say there is a VERY satisfying ending. This book is incredibly well-written. I found myself pausing while reading, and thinking wow, this author really knows what she's doing here. I also found myself thinking, before I reached the end, that I can't wait to read more books by this author, her writing has definitely made a lasting impression on me. Her use of 3 POV's, which could certainly present a challenge, is flawless. The story seems to flow effortlessly and everything makes perfect sense. I just loved it.I recommend Pretty Girls to those who want something different, something that might prevent them from sleeping well at night, but something that will get their mind racing as well as their heart. Thank you Karin Slaughter for telling this tale.

IMPORTANT: Read the trigger warnings!!!
I went into this book blind having no idea what I was about to read. If I’m being honest, I wish I’d never read this book. Was it a great story, incredibly written, captivating and intense? Yes. However, there are scenes in this book that I wish I never allowed in my head! I am an avid crime tv watcher. I’ve likely logged tens of thousands of crime scene hours in my brain but none of that prepared me for what was in this book. It’s vile, perverse, terrifying and will likely give me nightmares. So, (SPOILER ALERT WARNING). Tread lightly while you’re reading. I read this on the KU app, (so page numbers may differ) but Page 61 is the section of the book I should not have read. I was able to handle all other parts of this book l, but NOT this section! What the bad person does with the machete was TOO much!!! I actually stopped reading there, went online to ask my reader friends if there was going to be more like that scene, if so I was going to DNF the book. They told me that was the worst scene in the book. So, I continued reading. Every time I got to a scene where the character was going to visualize that section of the book again I skim read on fast forward so I wouldn’t have to see/read it again.Even though I wish I’d have never read this book because it was too gory for me the writing was phenomenal. The story itself was incredible and well developed. I can't blame the book just because I’m not the target audience. If you can handle gore and EXTREME and graphic sexual torture I think you’ll enjoy the book. For me personally, I couldn’t handle it. I’m going to have to read lots of sappy hallmark channel books to get these images out of my head!

Enjoyable
I read this book on recommendation; I really enjoyed it! I liked it enough to tell my bf about it who subsequently told me im not good at abridged storytelling lol but I'll try: this is a story of a family that lost their oldest daughter to kidnapping. It broke up the parents marriage and we get a couple chapters where the father (sam) is writing to the daughter who is gone (Julie). Aside from these few chapters, the story is told from 2 main POVs by the two sisters that are left- the eldest (Lydia) who turned to drugs when it all happened but is now sober 17 yrs and the youngest (Claire) who married the 'perfect' guy. Or so it seemed. He dies in the beginning of the book and from there she finds out he lived a secret life. The two sisters subsequently unravel all kinds of nasty business having to do with him and their lost sister. This book was a thriller from beginning to end! It's important to note that this is an adult book with very adult themes. For those that are sensitive, be aware there are some triggers here: kidnap, rape, torture, suicide/murder. For those that aren't sensitive it'll have you hooked with the storyline and all that gets unraveled!

dark
Dark. Quick read for such a long book. It got a little dull in the middle but the ending read like butter.

My first 5 Star read in a while
5 Stars - This is not a police procedural nor a book about detective trying to solve a mystery. It's a story of two sisters who have experienced a tragic crime in their family, and now the same pattern of crimes is seemingly continuing. This is not a book about a novel, clever twist, or long breathless action. Nonetheless, it is page-turning once it progressed beyond a certain point. What is compelling are the characters. Miss Slaughter writes them very well, and narrates the story very well.Though I do not like some introspective chapters that curtailed the speed of the plot, understandably, they're there for a good reason. It's been quite a while since I gave a book 5 stars and Pretty Girls deserves it.
