A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific

Tropical birds in great technical detail
For a person who loves science, theory, and information, this book is unparalleled in the field. It's fascinating reading whether you are interested in it as a field guide or not. There are a lot of islands covered so there is much information not needed if you visit only one of them. But it may be the only place to find bird information on some obscure places. I didn't take this with me in the field in Hawai'i because I think there are better field guide books for that area.

THE field guide for Hawaii and Pacific Islands
This book has it all - color drawings of key species, detailed species descriptions, and the locations where the birds are found - critical since some species are unique to particular islands while others are ubiquitous. The book is organized well, with the pictures all together, and a good index. Essential if you are birding in the Pacific.

It’s decent
Not a bad book. Decent illustrations.

Wish There Was a Better Field Guide
I wish there were a newer, more comprehensive guide to this part of the world. I bought the book because I want to be able to identify birds in French Polynesia. I've spent some time looking through it, trying to identify some of the birds I photographed, and found the book to be less than user friendly. That said, it's better than having no guide.

Recommended for serious birders
Comprehensive and complete for tropical pacific birds. I like the drawings and field mark notations. Only negative is that there is so much material, in the filed you can get bogged down in minor species from far away (from Hawaii).

Useful book
This looks to be a great book but I am yet to use it. It would be nice if the plates were alongside the descriptions along with a map, as you can't quickly see which bird can be found on what island.

Got to hate plates
I have no idea why some publishers continue to produce books that have the color "plates" on one page and the discription on another (usually a few hundred pages away). The discriptions in this book are very good and the pictures are limited but good.Would I buy this book again?Yes, I just wish it was more user friendly.

Excellent!
Still the most comprehensive guide on the region. Have been waiting eagerly for the upgraded version to be published, but since the projected date has come and gone last year, it might be assumed that the plans encountered some unforeseen obstacles. A shame really! Whichever funding body let Pratt down in financing the new publication should seriously reconsider. His work is a definite treasure towards ornithological studies in the Pacific region.

Do not understand the question.
Very much what I wanted but I prefer to have the illustrations either at the beginning or opposit the text for a particular bird.
