One of My Favorite Books!!
I absolutely love this book!! It's simply wonderful. You have a front row seat to her joys, triumphs and losses. The author does it with humor and reality. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone, not just someone trying to get motivated about losing weight. This book just makes you smile. There is a spattering of course language here and there. Her relationship with her sister is wonderful. I just express how happy this book made me! I loved it.

An Honest Revealing Account of One Woman's Weight Journey
This is a very enjoyable account of how a young Australian woman loses half her body weight. It's written in journal form and shows how she succeeds pound by pound. At first I thought that it was very well-written, but I sensed that the story was over almost before it had begun because it seemed obvious that she was losing weight regularly and was heading towards her goal weight with ease. But there are some small setbacks along the way. Shauna Reid struggles with low self-esteem, depression, and cravings. She writes in a humorous way, and I'm sure people a lot younger than I will appreciate her self-deprecating remarks. I'll admit that although I was mildly amused by some of the remarks and the incidents, it wasn't laughing-out-loud funny for me. I tend to take a serious attitude towards weight and weight loss. She also struggles with work issues, has some interesting travel experiences, and meets the love of her life while she is still making her way to her goal weight. You'll fall in love with Gareth, a lover who cheers her on but isn't shocked when she tells him that she used to weigh 351 pounds.I found myself liking Shauna and I looked forward to getting back to the book each evening. It's a pleasurable book to read if you enjoy a good weight-loss success story with all the ups and downs that usually go with a diet and exercise program.

If you buy only one weight-loss story, buy this one!
I have bought way too many weight-loss books in the last month. Many disappoint. Not this one! It's not only a compelling story, but Shauna is an excellent writer. She makes me care, and she doesn't bore. This is the best of 16 books I've bought by other people who have journaled their struggles with weight loss. With some of the books I have read, it has seemed that the delving into the angst from their lives becomes maudlin. Shauna just reports her young life. And bless her heart, who wouldn't have turned to food? Good for her that it was food and not drugs. The turmoil caused by her stepfather was terrible. Her description of life as a morbidly obese person is honest and sometimes brought me to tears. I often turned to the picture of her at the end of the book just to be able to know that she won her battle. And what a beauty she is..inside and out.

What a great read!
The book is an addictive read from the first few pages. You feel her pain, shame and sadness. Her upbringing was horrible, being told she was fat all the time. To be treated that way as a child is so damaging. She put her mind to it, tired of living in such a trapped life. She persisted for multiple years, finally achieving her goal and changing her life in process. A great read for everyone or anyone who has ever struggled with their weight. Although I have never been considered obese, I have fought the "lard bust" since I was a teenager. And like her....I look back at pictures and I was so skinny....what was I thinking. She comes full circle and smaller body to a new life. Such a great read.......

Moving and funny account of triumphing over your insecurities
The plot of Shauna Reid's book sounds almost like a chick lit book...girl goes on weight loss plan looking for self-worth and conveniently finds a tender and caring Scottish man to sweep her off her feet who loves her just as she is. There are definitely aspects of Dietgirl that are Bridget Jones-esque, but knowing that it is a true story makes the book so much more meaningful. The book is laid out like a diary, with most entries including the date of the author's weight loss journey and her current weight that week. But what starts out as a book about weight loss becomes much more a story of how our past influences who we are, and ultimately, how we have to break free of the scars we bear from our childhood and take responsibility for our own happiness. A great thing about this book is that it is an honest account of weight loss...the author doesn't just start losing weight and keep going until she's a supermodel. She suffers setbacks along the way and is at times crippled by depression and self-doubt. But like the super heroine alter-ego that she assumes to write her popular blog, the author takes her kryptonite (in this case, chocolate) in stride and fights back, saving herself in the process.

Honest
I liked her honesty. Everyone I know that has many pounds to lose, have these brutal thoughts. It was nice to see them on print. Despite this, it is still an easy read. Has helped keep my mind on the game. I will buy one as a gift to a dear friend. My favorite quote "Weight loss isn't about willpower or motivation; it's just the cumulative effect of tiny actions over time."

Love!!!
Such a relatable book! Reading about the ups and downs of a person with extreme weight issues and food issues who finally decides to make a realistic effort to get healthy and lose weight was truly a breath of fresh air. Shauna is funny, charming, and expresses herself in a way that not only makes you like her a lot but also want to hang out with her, exercise with her, and move to Scotland.

One hell of a read!
I found this book entertaining and engrossing from beginning to end. It's a cliche to say that it made me laugh and cry - but the truth is that it really did make me do both. The book covers over 4 years of real-life 'diary entries' from Shauna Reid, an Australian in her early 20s who, in 2001, weighed 25 stone. The book follows her gradual weight loss over the next 4 years until she loses half her body weight and finally makes peace with herself. Needless to say, it is an inspirational story for anybody trying to lose weight. But what really makes the book stand out is Shauna's writing style. She is clearly a fine writer, and I whizzed through the pages thoroughly caught up in her feelings and emotions. As well as being a weight loss memoir, the book also covers topics such as bereavement, falling in love, travel and career progression. It was amazing to read how Shauna's confidence rose and fell at different stages and how she learnt to deal with insecure thoughts.Overall, the book has a very positive message in terms of weight loss and health. I loved the attitude that Shauna developed towards her body and fitness. We all need to show more appreciation for how wonderful our bodies are and stop being so critical of them! This book is compassionate and wise and funny - I highly recommend it.

go, shauna, go!
A beautifully written memoir. Every woman can relate to Shauna Reid and her weight problems, even if not every woman has to battle quite so many pounds. Shauna writes with wry humour. I just loved it from beginning to end!
