Informative and engaging!
Are your kids homeschooling or distance learning this fall? If you’d allow me to recommend just one thing to buy to support learning, take my word and buy these two books! Herstory: 50 Women and Girls Who Shook Up the World and Wildlives: 50 Extraordinary Animals That Made History have been favorites in our house for the last 6 months!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So what makes them worth owning? Each volume contains 50 incredible true stories of women and animals who did amazing things in the world. You’ve likely heard some of these stories (such as Joan of Arc, Helen Keller, and Rosa Parks, or even Balto, Koko, and Roy & Silo), but many will be new. The volumes are organized into categories, like “Rescue & Protect” and “Believe & Lead”. The stories are told over full-page spreads, are brightly illustrated by Sarah Walsh, and include primary source photographs and documents when available.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Both also include contain back-matter spreads of where the animals were born or when the women were born, which is were we start our readings in the mornings. As you all know, I often read to the girls over breakfast. After we’d read a few picture books or chapters of our read aloud, we’d open to these spreads and each girl would pick and animal or woman to read about that day. By now, we’ve read most of these stories and revisited many of them multiple times.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But even better? The girls have independently started to use these two books as reference books! The other day, when reading The One and Only Ivan, we read about a boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure in a zoo and was saved by one of the gorillas. My older daughter ran to get Wildlives to read us the true story of Benti Jua, the gorilla who did rescue a boy at the Brookfield Zoo in 1996!

Cannot recommend enough
I love reading children's books and this may be my absolute favorite. Each story in the book is so important and well told. I wish this book had existed when I was growing up. They have chosen a diverse selection of women- from all over the world and through time- to highlight as leaders in various fields- art, science, civil rights, etc. What I find so meaningful in this book is that they address the societal issues that help provide context for their achievements, so you learn more about the time period and can really appreciate the contribution. As an adult I have felt inspired by each individual and am learning alongside my daughter. For example, today she wanted to read about Coco Chanel, who did not interest me, but then I learned she designed clothing that were more comfortable for women so they could participate in nontraditional activities.I originally bought this book for my 4 year old because she was into princesses- watching princess movies and playing dress up. I really wanted to provide with better role models and open her up to more imaginative play. This book has surpassed my expectations in that. While out in nature the other day, she pretended to be Sacagawea, building shelter, exploring and finding medicine. Earlier today she asked to create a book and publish it like Beatrix Potter. Even more importantly perhaps though it has engaged us in meaningful discussions that I would probably not have had with a child so young, such as how people respond to hardships or overcome the limitations society puts on them. My older sons have taken an interest in the book as well, and of course it is just as important for them to hear the stories. I really cannot recommend enough.

So Glad I Bought This!
What a great book for girls! My toddler daughter was watching too many Disney Princesses, which is fine, but I wanted to broaden her view of women, & teach her about some extraordinary women in history! This book is enjoyable for both of us. Beautiful & artistic illustrations with 2-page histories on each of the 50 women. Inspiring stories & quotes. Photos of the real women. It holds her attention at bedtime. And it’s uplifting & educational on what little girls with big dreams can do with their lives! This was a great purchase... AND a great price too!

Now these are women to learn about.
Bought this for a granddaughter and was very pleased. It’s a lovely book and the women featured vary widely across time and expertise, but they are worthy of learning about. There are no actors or celebrities; there are leaders but no politics. It was just the kind of book I wanted for my intelligent, talented granddaughter.

YAAAAS!! An honest, kid-appropritae women’s history book!
Bought this for my nieces (aged 6, 6, and 4)—their mom thought it was such a cool book and the girls were all over it! They were reading it at bedtime that very night.I flipped though it before I gave it to them. The book is arranged like a colored encyclopedia (beautiful illustrations!), with a new bad-ass woman on each page (and there are a LOT of options—from all different countries and ethnicities (YAY!)). I was a history student, currently work in a history industry, and I have to say this book does a good job at both representation and accuracy. It does gloss over certain sensitive aspects (suicide, etc.) due to audience age, but doesn’t sanitize the realities of inequality and racism too much from what I saw. It can be a good conversation starter to talk with young people about difficult topics like this. The wording is fairly dense, so very young kids will probably need someone reading the book with them for a few more years. An awesome gift for any woman, and SO important for young girls to see themselves shown honestly in a historic context. I doubt they would learn about half of these amazing people in a typical U.S. school.

Satisfied
It is a lovely book, just as described, hopefully it will inspire the little girl I love for whom this is a gift for her 8th birthday. Fortunately there is a paper cover as inside the hardback cover the pages were upside down! Would recommend.

Definitely buying more copies!
Love this book! Absolutely amazing for kids.I bought this book to read with my six-year-old niece. The language is a bit complex for independent reading/understanding so I changed up the wording a little bit as I read to her. She loves it!The illustrations are amazing, the stories are inspiring. It has lots of adventurous and interesting information not just for girls, but for all children. Many of the stories are good opportunities to introduce and discuss difficult but important subjects, all while teaching children about history and the many privileges that they get to experience as a result of the courage and sacrifice made by many individuals. As a professional who's worked with children for over seven years, I give this book a 5/5Not only for the book itself, but for the great conversations that result from it.Teachers, therapists, counsellors, parents & everyone, buy this book. And not just for the girls!
