Very important 'book' for those that read the Bible (in my opinion)
In my years of trying to do Bible Study, I found I had to delve into the original Torah in Hebrew to get anywhere. It did not take long for me to realize the original Torah had no "words" in it, and it is written in a very archaic "Picture Book" style; each so called Hebrew Character, having a life and meaning of its own, and to read the Torah required an intense understanding of these 'things' to get it to light up pictures in the mind.Kaplan does things with this Bi-Lingual edition things few if any others have ever done. He breaks the Torah down to its most simplistic meanings, and gets them down to as close to the common accepted meanings and translations of the "Bible", which claims to have origins in Torah. And shows some subtle differences along with teachings on how these meanings come about. This book acts as a conduit to lesson arguments between 'scholars' who take sides, this works as a leveling ground, so students can get a better perspective of what all is entailed in actual Torah study from its roots. This book also explains the issue of fragmented texts. Its near impossible to get a copy of an "original Torah" scroll. Over time, many parts have been 'lost' and what we have now today is as good as we can get. But to the initiated, one can see which parts "light up" which one can tell are the real original, and which parts are contrived, being 'stuff' added to or removed due to political or religious needs. So I think this is a must have book for anybody really wanting to explore Spiritual stuff through words.Oh, I would not bother with the English only version, it is kind of pointless then. The whole point is, that Torah CAN NOT be "Translated" or "Transliterated" since it is not made up of WORDS. The Torah is a bunch of symbols representing a hierarchy of meanings at different levels, not following a linear time scheme, and not set in any one single dimension. It has an infinite endless array of meanings depending on how it is approached. Kaplan here just barely touches on this, but does so enough to explain it so as not to insult the know it all scholar. The script Kaplan uses in the Bi-Lingual version too is very important, because not all things called "Hebrew" are Torah Hebrew.Just get the book. You will be glad you did, if you study it well that is.

Simply the best
This translation of the Torah is the best available you can get. Every Rabbi I showed this to was already aware of it and had nothing but glowing things about Rav Aryeh Kaplan.

This will be one of the most used books on your book shelf
I find myself not wanting to put this book down it reads like a wonderful story that you feel like you are a part of. It has Hebrew/English. When you open to any part of the book the Hebrew will be on the right page with the English on the left. The footnotes will be on the same open page and very easy to stop and read them to continue your reading. Nothing has been left out, it is such a pleasure to read without ever needing to flip through to somewhere else or need any other book to help understand. The maps are in the right places within the text. The pages are a perfect weight. The hardcover bound book is beautiful (I'm not sure if it comes other than this). It is a very thick book with nice standard dimensions. It would be perfect as a gift to yourself or someone else. It is absolutely fascinating. The tables of contents is written so that it is very easy to find what you are looking for. Easy to reference any part. The only thing that I wish it had would be some of thick ribbons sewn into the binding so you would be able to mark where you were.If you are looking for a very useful Torah this would be one that would stay in your hands and you would never want to put it down.

Not as good as I had hoped
The printing is not very clear especially for the Hebrew. The pages are shiny and that makes them harder to read. The notes are orthodox but not very illuminating. Overall it is okay but I would not buy again. Artscroll is likely a lot better.

straordinario !
