Simply a Must!
The quintessential addition to cornerstone the beloved collections of any classical enthusiast.Peerless, dearest Martha — arguably the greatest-living pianist. And, possibly, one of the very best to have ever played.Along with the beautiful booklet, inside the box: 48 CDs… recordings are from 1960 to 2014 (the Catalogues are issued from Deutsche Grammophon, Philips; not discounting, her Lugano Concertos CDs, additionally, there are the 1960s radio recordings of her legendary Chopin recitals.Personally, I own two of these CD box-sets — one to play. And one, unopened, as an ornament for my mantle.Evidently, such is the nature of her playing; that being, the ability to couple the impressionistic humanity of pathos and elation, with the elusive incantations that are synonymous and kindred with aspects inclined to those celestial idioms of an ensorcelling quality, there is something to be stated about the way Martha effortlessly labours about with a sort of shapeshifting clairvoyance — rendering her otherworldly performances into peripheries both phenomenological and heartbreaking. She is God-gifted — say what you will about her style or presentation. The manner in which she playfully eddies about the intangible, the, unquantifiable and dare I say it, the heavenly, puts her in a league-of-her-own.Note, the rarity of her voice; it is one that identifies the themes accessible to notions tantamount to being an undeniable force of nature — even when playfully eddying about the softer motifs. Though it’s not in the sense of domineering intransigence; in complete antithesis, she has the gifted ability to fluently court and channel and champion the consciousness’ of the composers oeuvres. Her’s is a voice of selflessness and devotion, it is one of a conduit that gives birth to the soulful, humane apparitions where the scores and pieces of the past can haunt us, countlessly, as though we were hearing them for the first time.Lucian

Sublime playing
Like some of the buyers of this box set, I already have quite a few of the CD’s it contains, but to get the ones I don’t own for the price of the set is an absolute bargain. And I have no complaint about the packaging; if the whole kit and caboodle came in a brown paper bag it would still be a bargain. And yes, CD 11 has the wrong cover, but so what, the booklet has the correct tracks. This is a box set of 48 CD’s full of absolutely sublime music, played by one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pianists if the second half of the 20th century; and not only do you have Martha, but a wonderous list of supporting artists – Mischa Maisky, Nelson Freire, Gidon Kremer, Mstislav Rostropovich, Daniel Barenboim et al.Buy this box set, start playing, and you’ll think maybe you’ve died and gone to heaven.Thank you Deutsche Gram, and thank you Martha.

Raccolta largamente consigliata
Agli estimatori, raccolta largamente consigliata.

Martha Argerich over the years, in a very enjoyable collection
As familiar as I am with the pianist Martha Argerich, somehow I have managed to build a collection without including hardly any of her performances. Until now, that is. Realizing that recently, and examining the various compilations of her works available (primarily this comprehensive one issued by Deutsche Grammophon, and a smaller collection from Warner) I decided to pick up this box set. I'm very happy that I did.The 48 CDs altogether include all of her recordings with Deutsche Grammophon and Philips (both part of Universal Classics). They are packaged with the original CD artwork - although the pairings are not always identical. Disc 30, for example, includes the Shostakovich and Haydn Piano Concertos originally issued on this CD: Piano Concerto 1 / Piano Concerto 11, as well as the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto. The 48 discs, in other words, include slightly more than what had previously been released on 48 separate CDs. I haven't gone through the entire box set in enough detail to put that full picture together, and it doesn't really make that much difference except for those folks who like to have their CDs as fully packed with music as possible. I load my music onto the computer and play it from there, so the disc arrangement is not particularly important to me.It will take me a while to work my way through these performances, but what I've listened to so far has been excellent. There are some pieces here that are completely new to me, as well, for example the two-piano version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker performed by Argerich together with Nicolas Economou who arranged the piano version used in that recording (originally released here: Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker Suite; Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances Op.45. Delightful to hear the familiar Nutcracker music performed on piano, a very enjoyable and different way to hear it performed. This is not particularly inexpensive although for 48 discs the current price is about 2 dollars per CD, which is bargain territory. For performances of this quality, I'm glad that I decided to pick this up before it became difficult to find. The packaging is acceptably nice, a heavy box with a fabric feel to it, the large booklet gives all details of the recordings and includes a short essay and chronology of her performances for the DG label. The discs themselves are packaged with original artwork, as earlier mentioned, sometimes resulting in very small print on the reverse of the discs that almost requires a magnifying glass to read. I don't object to that, the information I am looking for is in the booklet and if I want to read the original LP or CD notes then I can bring out the magnifying glass to help out. In comparison to other box set collections (and I have a lot of them) this is considerably better than average.

Argerich, die argentinische
Tastentigerin.
