Then we're good to go again
The program is the answer to having to spend a lot of money on live ammunition with which to practice at a range or out in the boonies. I've had the program now for about 2 weeks. During that time I must have fired at least 700 times. The program and the 9mm LaserLyte have paid for themselves in ammunition costs.LASR allows me to train just as I've been instructed at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. It's so versatile that I can set up just about any drill including the timing. This is a must have training device for anyone who keeps firearms for self defense. The reason I withheld the last star is that sometimes the program goes a bit crazy. It starts clearing the targets of recorded shots on its own. When it starts doing that, I have to shut it down and restart it. Then we're good to go again. I hear they're about to come out with an updated version of the software. I'm hoping that there's a fix in the new version for this little annoyance. If not, that's O.K. because in all other respects, LASR is outstanding!

WOW!!
Wow!! I don't often get carried away by enthusiasm for things I buy, but this thing is special. It really lives up to its promise. So, let's begin at the beginning. The price is about $12.00 less than you can buy it on the developer's site. What else do you need? You need a Windows version computer, and it makes sense to use a laptop because of portability. You need a webcam. I got a $22.50 Logitech one from Amazon and it works fine. You need a laser shooting device. This can be a SIRT pistol which is fashioned after a Glock 17 and is sold on Amazon and other places. This pistol allows follow up shots without racking your slide but I wanted to use my own guns and I wanted to avoid the expense of the SIRT. So, I bought a Sure Strike laser bullet in 9mm for my CW9 and a 38 special adapter for my S&W and Charter revolvers. I already had a LaserLyte system that fits in the muzzle but I found LASR system only recorded about 2/3 of the shots from the LaserLyte. Don't know what gives there.A few days after ordering, you get an envelope in the mail with a plastic card giving your activation code. It's good for only one computer so be sure that is the one you download the software on. Download is automatic. When it is finished, it asks for your authorization code and then you're all set up. Rather than a user's manual, there is a video that plays after the download to acquaint you with features. This video plays every time you load the software til you tell it to stop. With this video, everything is pretty intuitive, and you learn by doing as much as anything else. As a full disclosure I'm still learning. Camera setup was automatic. It just needs to be plugged into a USB port. After camera and software are set up, you take the usual dryfire precautions. Every careful shooter checks, rechecks and knows exactly what he did with the live ammo. The laser ammo "cartridge" is assembled by installing a battery and screwing in the tip that receives the firing pin strike. In my case, I have one for the 9mm and one for the .38. Then, the gun is ready. Now, you select your target. I printed some off the internet, but it can be anything in the room - spray starch top, light switch, ping pong ball, etc. With the camera focused on your target, on the computer you select by circle, rectangle or triangle, the area on you target that constitutes a "hit." It even has the capacity to identify a target for a special purpose such as resetting the system when this target is shot This save you having to do a reset on your computer. You then select your sound effects - such as a gunfire sound when you pull the trigger and a metal sound when the hit the target. There's a menu with varied selections. There is some selection also for shooter commands with "Evil Monkey" being my personal favorite. And there's a shot timer.I've been shooting on this system for the last four days, and I have "shot" my guns more in these four days more than I have in the last two years. It's not only cheap. It's not only convenient. It's fun. I realize the value of dry fire but it's boring. A laser system that adds visual feedback is less boring but a laser system with visual and audio feedback and a shot timer is just fun. Thus far, in my discovery mode, I've been target shooting and practicing my draw. Each of the three guns I use it with have different triggers and this system rewards good trigger control. I also look forward to using his more for one hand and offhand shooting.I didn't start out to get all wee-wee about this system. I have read the reviews of others who say their wet fire shooing improved after using this. I hope that is true with me, but I haven't been to the range since I started using this. And, I just thought, this may be a grand idea for older people who can't get to a range any more. Had something like this been available for my dad during his lifetime, I think he would have had a great time with it.So, in case you can't tell, I like his system a lot and highly recommend it.

Overpriced for what you get.
Very expensive for what you get…I researched and watched videos of LASR shot reporting system and similar setups and was initially very excited to purchase the software for use in my Glock hangun and AR 15 with the Laserlyte training slugs. I figured I could use the camera in my Laptop and be able to “Dry – zero” my firearms and practice on this software and then “range qualify” every other month or so to conserve ammo. I realize that with the Laserlyte inserts I would need to rack the slide/pull charging handle between shots but I did not have the money to invest in the more expensive SIRT laser bolt and etc which is ok. Well, I can get by with my laptop camera (low quality) for now and the Laserlyte inserts (excellent quality), but the software itself should have much more functionality for the price. The greatest perk is to be able to post any target you wish on the wall, and of course if you have a laser that can fire repeatedly between racking/charging you can time your shots and speed accuracy/precision as well. However, unless you get the plug-in packages from $5-$20 you cannot designate scoring on your targets, and you don’t get pre-formatted targets nor do you get additional target save abilities. I am quite disappointed and just recently read that there is now open source software called ShootOff that essentially does the same thing as LASR only at no cost save peripherals (Laser insert, webcam). Although it does what it claims to do, LASR is not at all a value for the money as I have unfortunately learned too late.
