Cute and educational book
Cute and educational book that I read to them when we are doing our insect 🐜 lessons :) After reading the book I had the kids make a picnic blanket with paper (the weaving paper thing) and cut and glue foods from the weekly grocery ads onto the picnic basket- we used plastic ants 🐜 to add more fun to the scene (all this goes with the book)

100
Multiple ways to get to 100 using ants. In backwards order to the book = 10x10, 20x5, 25x4, 50x2, 100x1.I just did not like how the ants did not get any food in the end and were angry at the littlest ant.... I would have preferred them to have found lots of leftover crumbs to carry home for each of them.

It’s a nice story that introduces math in a fun way
One hundred ants were singingand marching in a row.“We’re going to a picnic!A hey and a hi dee ho!”A couple days ago, ants invaded our kitchen from all fronts. From under cabinets, through little cracks between the molding and floor, and through the window they marched with purpose, having discovered a bounty of crumbs and sticky spills.I went to war.The battle lasted the entire day and I showed no mercy. I sprayed a little, mopped a lot, cleaned cabinets and ran to the store for twelve of the most powerful ant traps I could buy. All the while, I kept thinking about this children’s book, One Hundred Hungry Ants. We read it many times to our kids when they were younger and were just learning the early concepts of math. One hundred ants head out to a picnic, marching in a row. The littlest ant thinks they are “moving way too slow” and he has an idea. So begins the math lesson embedded in this cute story about sets of ten and grouping. It’s a nice story that introduces math in a fun way. Will the ants reach the picnic in time? Curl up with your little one and have a look. And if there’s no food at the picnic, I’m sure the ants will find something in our kitchen!

Entertaining ways to make 100
My daughter seemed to enjoy this book and we have read it 2-3 times. My son is the same age (7), but he only had the patience for it one time. It is a neat book about demonstrating different ways to make a hundred. Unfortunately the ants spend some much time rearranging how to make a hundred, that they miss out on what they were try to get. You have to read the book...I would hate to give the whole story.

My second grade class loved this book!
We are learning different ways to skip count and find patterns in ways to get to 100. I read this to the students in class. They loved the book, the processing, and pictures. They were able to process and discuss the different patterns of the lines the 100 ants formed. Then they were able to relate this to coins in a dollar. They book is ideal for guided reading and discussion. It has rhythm, which is important for young children to recall concepts. It also it is a lot of fun. They enjoyed me reading to them, and then they wanted to hold the book and read it again to themselves. I highly recommend this book, for learning and just for fun reading.

It is a lovely story aimed at young children but for me spoilt by a punitive end. I will read it but will also suggest a discussion whether there could be a different end.

Well-received.
Competed with the Wi gadgets. Useful for children of seven/eight who are learning about bonded numbers; re-re-read with amusement by grandmother and reader.

A one off read
Once it's read once to children I haven't found them keen to read it again. The pictures are OK and the story is OK but it lacked true imagination. Maybe I expected too much? It will probably be good as a starter for a maths activity.
