You cannot go wrong
I am not normally a fan of anthologies. But this book is exceptional. You do not need to know anything about Honor Harrington to enjoy it. But if you do, it is mind blowing. The back story it illuminates is beyond gratifying. It also helps that the writing is superb. What does not help is that it contains all the copy editing b.s. which Baen has allowed in almost every book of this series. They are irritating and make one come to a full stop, disrupting the flow of the story.Nonetheless I recommend this book. While it would be far better to start with On Basilisk Station and learn about Honor as the series unfolds, this book is also a damn fine way to be introduced to the Honorverse. The story Beauty and the Beast is worth the price of admission by itself. The other stories are equally valuable. All are eminently good reads.I am on my third read in the week since it arrived. You cannot go wrong.

Great collection except for one story
This anthology has five very different short stories:By the Book by Charles E. GannonA Call to Arms by Timothy ZahnBeauty and the Beast by David WeberBest Laid Plans by David Weber andObligated Service by Joelle PresbySome of these I wasn't as fond of, and others I loved.Gannon's By the Book I would have enjoyed in a collection of SF mysteries. It didn't really have the feel of the Honor Harrington universe. I felt as though it had a Honorverse envelope wrapped around a mystery set in Earth's not-distant future.Zahn's A Call to Arms was much better. Set in Manticore's more distant past when Manticore didn't have the end-all and be-all of technology, this military science fiction story had me on my toes throughout.Weber's Beauty and the Beast was perhaps my favorite. In the story of how Honor's parents came to know each other, I could see the hints of the people they would become. And yes, there are truly villainous bad guys.Weber's second story Best Laid Plans made me smile. A young Honor Harrington has an adventure.Presby's Obligated Service, for me, was an absorbing story. It wasn't always comfortable to read, but it made me think. In so many of the books, we see the more upper-crust Grayson citizens. This is more of a look at the underside of that life as a young woman tries to make her way in the Grayson navy. This is absolutely written for fans of the series. If it weren't for the story By the Book, the collection would be a solid 4.5 stars, rounded up to five. That first story drags it down to a four-star book for me.

#6
Any time I can visit the Honor verse I'll jump aboard. This sixth anthology didn't disappoint. Like Honor I can't stand coffee and drink Hot Chocolate instead, one of the first things I liked about the character.

Fun Stories in the Honor Harrington Universe
Five fun stories.Gannon's "By the Book" opens with young lieutenant Lee Strong leading a rescue for a ship captured by space pirates. After the gripping opening action, the lieutenant plays detective in treacherous politics at the space station where he delivers the rescued ship. The story's ending was surprising but satisfying.Zahn's "A Call to Arms" begins with a hiring interview for a mercenary admiral. The story then takes us to a Royal Manticoran Navy ship running simulated space battles. Some great space action.Weber's "Beauty and the Beast" features newly promoted lieutenant Alfred Harrington pursuing a medical education on Beowulf where mutual attraction flares with fellow student Allison Chou. Villains strike, and the action gets tight. Great characters, plot, and insights into Honor's parents.Weber's "Best Laid Plans" stars 12-year-old Honor Harrington and a tree cat."Obligated Service" by newbie author Presby features a midshipwoman from Grayson. Good character development and story. There was no Table of Contents in this book. To aid navigation on the Kindle, I added my own bookmarks for each story by searching on author name: Gannon, Zahn, Weber and Presby.

I loved it sight unseen
I loved it! I love anything available by this author, David Weber so knew that whatever he writes is about to make me love it. And he is one of them since he writes about Honor Harrington in the hospital again so I knew that I could be lucky enough to get to read my book overnight I so went back off home and took off my sling and for a while I took off the phone charger and also took off my glasses and also took off my oxygen intake because I was really pissed at when my book ends I was just thinking of how my book just ends there so that I was able to remember that it was still a damn good book one of my favorite authors David Weber had written and I needed read it to be able to read again and so I can see how he himself would be one of those authors who are not in the same position as my oxygen sling because it hurts so much that I can't possibly see him again and because seeing he was just an author of our own life again meant that he was the author of the beginning too that meant I would go back to my home able to read not needed is Itoobe able to read what I love about David Weber is that he's the author of the story in Beginning theAge most about diaspora biology and the kids coming homFrom my oxygen intake levels I could not have my sling on at least empire but at the reminded levels of oxygen intake I can still read it is by h

if you like Honor ‘Hornblower’ Harrington …
… you’ll like this book. It’s very good and more linked to the HH universe than some stories from 1-5.

Bit more waffle than others in the series
As with the other books in the series, there are slow passages but this book seemed to have more. The last story in particular seemed aimless till near the very end. I persevered out of loyalty and out of interest to see if the pace picked up - it just about did.
