Microsoft Compact Optical Mouse 500 - Black

I had been putting my standard desktop mouse in my 12" laptop bag whenever I took it anywhere, and it was a big, ungainly lump. I wanted something smaller but not uncomfortable.This mouse is perfect. It's much smaller, but still very comfortable. It works great. It feels very natural. It fits very nicely in the 12" laptop's bag. I could not have asked for a better mouse.It does feel a bit different than a standard desktop mouse - you sort of rest your forefinger along it, instead of resting your hand on it. But it feels comfortable and it's easy to get used to.I didn't want a wireless mouse due to all the problems that people have with them. Also my small children would be more likely to make off with it and hide it who knows where. I don't mind a mouse cord.As others have said here, the cord is somewhat short, about 2.5 feet, but that's still plenty long enough to reach the far corner of my 12" laptop. Even on my larger 15" laptop, it's more than enough to reach around to the far corner. I don't know why there are so many complaints about that here; it would be interesting to see how they use their mouse. If a person really needs a longer cord, it isn't hard to find USB extension cords.I don't mind that it isn't retractable; rather I prefer that this cord is probably more durable than a retractable one. Stuffing it into the bag is not a problem.I'm glad that it doesn't have those idiotic extra side buttons that some mice have; I only ever use those by accident. It just has right & left buttons and center wheel.The price was great too -- only $2.99 for an unopened new one!It even looks nice, probably the best-looking mouse I've ever owned (my first was the "dove bar" mouse, about 1991, for use with WordPerfect 5.1 for MS-DOS!).

I bought this mouse for use while traveling, as I didn't want the weight/bulk of a normal mouse. I was initially hesitant based on the mixed reviews here, but after doing some research on Microsoft's own website to make sure I knew what I was getting, ordered one from Amazon. Microsoft has recently redesigned many, if not all of their mouses, so the mouse I actually received didn't look 100% like the picture on Amazon, although it is the same model number. The mouse that is pictured is the old version, with the 'separate' mouse buttons and the depression under the scroll wheel. The new version that I received has a flat 'one-piece' design with a partial split down the center to form the buttons. Regardless, I haven't had any problems using this mouse with my netbook, it does its job plain and simple. The cord is in fact only about 30", so it's perfect for traveling, assuming you have a USB port on the side of the notebook you plan on using it on (good notebook manufacturers place USB ports on both sides to account for this issue). Obviously a 30" cord is not suitable for desktop PC use, unless your USB port is right up front with your monitor. Also, some people are complaining about the small size, but again this is intended to be a compact travel mouse. If you are that particular about the size of your mouse, then go buy a mouse that feels comfortable to you instead of complaining, there are plenty of other choices on the market. This mouse would also be suitable for children as a normal sized mouse may be uncomfortable for them to hold, but just keep in mind you may need to purchase a USB extension cable or hub if you are using a desktop.

As the title says, this is a great product for its price. Obviously it wasn't made for people who want to use it on an all day basis (which in case you should get a standard size mouse) This mouse was made small to keep hidden in your laptop bag and the wire is long enough and works very seamlessly. You will find the typical 2 buttons with scroller that pushes down like a button. Nothing fancy but just perfect.

Nice and small so it's easily transportable with a laptop. However, this would not be the mouse you want if you have a desktop as the cord is only about 30 inches long (as others have pointed out and I confirm) so it's probably not long enough unless your PC sits on your desk. But overall for use with my laptop, I really like it. Great value for being only $11.Also, be aware that the mouse pictured here on Amazon is the old style mouse. The mouse lives up to the name. Extremely small. Much smaller than I thought it would be just looking at the numbers (or even the box). It is flatter than most mice this size, not a good body to rest even a small hand on, but they made it easy to hold from the sides. Definitely avoid this for gaming. Too hard to move something so small very far very fast. This mouse is nothing but compact, but if you are looking for compact, this is it.The tracking and buttons are top notch. standard DPI and great accuracy. I expect a Microsoft sensor to last and hold up. The buttons and wheel are solid and fast with a good click sound for now. Will have to see how they hold up.The cord was exactly what I was looking for. Last travel mouse died because the retractable cause the wires to disconnect inside the mouse. Something common in "notebook" mice. But my main mouse has a bit too long of a cord to make traveling perfectly easy. The short cord on this is perfect for traveling and setting up with a laptop away.Note: I always use a mouse pad.

I'm one who hates change - this is exactly the same mouse as I have been using for years, but the cord on it is becoming a bit "iffy". Was pleased I could replace what I had exactly - I like the compact size and the cord in long enough that it is not a problem.
