Fox 40Mini Electronic Whistle

I first bought a different brand electronic whistle. (I am a high school football official and I just wanted to be prepared for the season if they were going to make us wear a mask due to the coronavirus). I was disappointed in the first whistle (not a Fox whistle ... should have known better). This Fox whistle is much better. It is smaller; it sounds more like a whistle; it has batteries that will last longer than the AAA batteries on the other whistle. It includes an LED light and I'm not sure how or why I would need or use that, but it's there. Again, I was pretty impressed with how much this electronic whistle sounds like the whistle I blow on the field (a Fox 40 whistle). So, lesson learned: stick with Fox when buying whistles.

This whistle is extremely loud and would be great in an emergency. It is not what I was expecting for my gym teacher though. I don’t think we will ever use it indoors. The light is not extremely bright, but I did not purchase it for the light.

Like the headline says, this is a good product for its type. However, it still can't compare to a standard human-mouth-powered whistle. I've been using it as a swimming referee this season as an alternative to a traditional whistle and it works okay indoors with limited ambient noise, but I definitely wouldn't trust it to be heard outdoors or in a noisy environment. I like the slim profile as opposed to most electronic whistles that are fat and bulky, but it only has one tone as opposed to three like the fat ones. I'm fine with that because really one is all I need and from my experience, the alternate tones on the fat ones are even harder to hear than the standard. If you're in an environment where being heard is crucial, though (lifeguard, survival, or outdoor sports official), get a traditional whistle. They're way cheaper and much more reliable ($20 for this vs. $5 for a regular Fox40 Classic).

Currently in my second one. My first one worked great. I loved it because it sounded like an actual whistle and it was small enough to hang on my keychain. Once I dropped it, it stopped working. My second one I purchased and wrapped it with a rubber lining in case I dropped it again. Worked fine until battery ran out. Once I changed the batteries, it stopped working again. I don’t know what I didn’t wrong. I think it lasted about two months.

I love it. I have a large version on this product that I also enjoy but this fun size version is cute, easy to carry, an does the job.

I regret the purchase. Here's what needs to be fixed and why. Carry a back-up whistle.1. Battery compartment door should be firmly attached. The current friction lock of molded plastic is inadequate. It should require a tool or four-finger lock to prevent the accidental loss of battery compartment door when in use or use a firmer plastic. This will prevent the battery compartment door from accidentally coming off while on the pitch and focus is elsewhere.2. If you have a detachable battery compartment door that isn't attached by tool or complex locking mechanism, it should be roped or otherwise attached to the main-body of the whistle to avoid loss when battery compartment door is accidentally removed during use.3. The power cell should not be 4 watch batteries. Use batteries that are common to consumers so that the batteries can be easily replaced without the need of special order (this type of cell battery is hard to find the night before a game).4. An electric whistle doesn't need a flashlight. I discovered the LED light was powered on in several instances. I'm hopeful the whistle has a timed automatic power off circuit or the flashlight inadvertently turned-on could discharge the batteries resulting in the untimely need/replacement of the batteries.5. Volume should be adjustable, and the highest setting should be an uncomfortably high volume. While I never used this whistle in a match, my initial testing of the whistle prior to the start of a match left me curious whether this whistle would be loud enough. Unless it's illegal, make it too loud.6. Add a wrist strap. The necklace-length strap is useless - referees run a lot and can't have a whistle loosely hung around the neck (or tucked inside a shirt to prevent injury caused by the whistle during use).This product with these fixes is worth $50 to me - I purchased it because it's small not because it was $20. A whistle that has a battery compartment door that comes off while in use that exposes 4 watch-size batteries to loss (and the resulting malfunction of the whistle during use) isn't worth $1.00 me (the price of my back-up whistle).Prior to my first match with this whistle during pre-game coin-toss, the battery compartment door fell off. I only found the battery compartment door on the pitch later, after I had accepted its loss and used my back-up whistle for the match.While I didn't lose the batteries when the battery compartment door fell off, I observed that these batteries could easily fall out during the match as I was anticipating the need to run the entire pitch a total of 20-30 times with this device in hand. I did express my disappointment about the loss of the use of my shiny, new electric-whistle to my fellow referees and credited good planning as the expectation.To Fox 40 - Replace this product and apologize. Get feedback from users before you go to market with a product design. This whistle does not meet the requirements of this referee. I will discard it.

Like that it is small and light, making it easy to hold in your hand or put in your pocket. It’s also very loud. You can ‘adjust’ the volume by pointing the speaker end up and towards intended hearers for greater volume or down and away for less.

Great for use in a gym. Wont blow your ears out but loud indoors. Not suitable for outdoors though. Sound isn't loud enough for that

Works well. It's loud enough. It allows you to yell/ coach/ instruct players during practices. As we all know how hard it is to talk/ expell got air out of our mouth as a coach and blow a whistle.The LED light is a bonus, although it's not the brightest. Your cell phone light is much brighter, but works well in a pinch.Would highly recommend this electronic whistle.

This arrived on time - it was not the cheapest but the review of the cheap whistles indicated they are not fit for purpose. This is solid - and importantly loud.
