Talking Heads: Once in a Lifetime: The Stories Behind Every Song

I really enjoy these 'Stories Behind The Songs' books and have quite a few of them. I've found the quality of each can be hit-and-miss. The Pink Floyd One 'Echoes: The...' is excellent and refers to band interviews and other sources to give you as much of what went into the inspiration, composition and recording of each song as possible. The Beatles 'Hard Days Write' is of similar quality. I'm a big fan of Talking Heads and was hugely looking forward to this book..However, its easily the worst SBTS book I've read. There's almost no reference to band interviews or other sources to explain the songs, no new information. Instead, the author just disassembles each track and describes what we can all hear anyway. The author actually just writes his guesses at what the lyrics mean without offering any information from the band about them. For the majority, he's clearly just sat down with a pad and the song, nothing else. That's not insight, it's just opinion. And the lyrical explanations are often heftily over-analytical, as if a 'deep and meaningful' paragraph might actually look convincing if it sounds 'heavy' enough..Stay clear - this book is 'all talking, no Heads'.

Tense and nervous and you can't relax ? Enjoy this thorough description of each and every song . Couldn't be bettered . Part of the sad joy is feeling the band splinter with each release. At some point someone will do a timeline book on them with the views of Chris, Tina and Jerry , omitting David . That would be very entertaining , this one will do till then .

"Ian Gittins" trägt auf 144 Seiten in verständlichen Englisch die Story der bedeutenden Band um David Byrne anhand Infos zu den Alben und deren Songs zusammen. Er beginnt mit einer kurzen Biographie der Band ,in der auch die Lebensdaten der vier Musiker aufgegriffen werden.Auf 15 Seiten orientiert er sich u.a. am dem Buch von "David Bowman "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa-The Adventures of Talking Heads" und präsentiert Fotos von Zeitgenossen wie "Blondie/Debby Harry" und den "Ramones". Die Fotos der "Talking Heads" Musiker : "David Byrne""Tina Weymouth" "Chris Frantz" und "Jerry Harrison" sind teilweise seitenfüllende Portraits und auch zum Teil in Farbe, aber nicht in einer chronologischen Reihnefolge und zu den jeweiligen Alben oder Bandphasen passend.Es gibt viele Gruppenfotos auch von den "Expanted Heads" aus der " Remain in Light" und "Speaking in Tongues" Phase. Begleitende Fotos von Bob Dylan, Lou Reed (RIP) Radiohead, etc. sind auch enthalten.In den 8 Kapiteln werden die 8 Studioalben von "Talking Heads 77" bis zu "Naked" auf der Grundlage jedes einzelnen Songs thematisiert, etwas 2 Songs pro Seite.Im Epilogue gibt es dann noch Infos zu seltenen Song, eine Diskographie und Chronologie.Die Soloalben wie "Songs for the Catherine Wheel" und " My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" von David Byrne hier mit "Brian Eno" (von dem auch 3 Fotos im Buch abgebildet sind) sind natürlich auch eingeordnet und erwähnt.Hier geht dann wohl mehr um die Musik, als um eine Biographie oder Bandstory.Um mit dem Buch etwas anfangen zu können, sollte man schon die Songs kennen, aber diese Art Buch wird wohl sowieso fast nur von Fans gelesen.
