In 2011, construction workers were shocked to uncover the remains of a woman in an abandoned lot in Queens, New York. Secrets of the Dead: The Woman in the Iron Coffin follows forensic archaeologist Scott Warnasch and a team of historians and scientists as they investigate this woman's story, revealing a vivid picture of what life was like for free African American people in the North.

I watched this program on PBS, and it was excellent. [For disclosure purposes, I have not purchased the DVD.] This is a most interesting story of the construction-site discovery of a 19th century woman's remains. The forensic archaeology and medical examinations are fascinating; today's scanning technologies make analysis much more thorough than past efforts. For me, the best parts were the delving into the cultural aspects of life in the 1850's, the research into finding this woman's identity, the touching re-internment effort, and the impact on today's residents of the area. Well worth a viewing.

Finding Your Roots
When human remains are discovered during the process of building a structure experts are brought into examine. This feels like an episode of 'Quincy' as the experts examine all the data and come up with what they feel are the answers.
