Took this book with me to Annapurna
I purchased this book to take with me to Annapurna Base Camp. We followed much of the route that Bonington's expedition took in 1970. The book was a good read, particularly interesting since I was going there. All it lacked was a good map of the route they took to the summit.

A mountaineering giant
Bonnington is a giant of mountaineering. The book is a classic account of a famous expedition. Great for an armchair adventurer like me.

Too technical for my taste
A classic tale of survival…In 1970 Chris Bonington led an expedition to Annapurna, for an assault on the unclimbed south face. They managed to place climbers on the summit, but one man was killed not far from Base Camp in an avalanche.I have been reading stories of survival recently, finding the triumph of the human spirit to be very uplifting. However, this book is more technical. The focus here is on the climb, not the individuals. Thus, I must honestly say I didn’t enjoy it.I give the book two stars...Quoth the Raven…

Bonington at his best
The first ascent of the South Face of Annapurna is told in Bonington's characteristically engaging style. No detail of organization, logistics or communication is left out, with the result that we end up knowing quite a lot about what the climbers had for breakfast and what was said during their radio conversations; but I see this as a good thing. The book is slightly lacking in exciting scenes of actual climbing, as many expedition books unfortunately tend to be, but has plenty of gripping material nevertheless.

The book which got me on a mountain trip in 1975
I had read this book back in 1975 when I was studying in the university and immediately got attracted to mountains. Chris Bonnington is a three dimensional personality. He was one of the top climbers of the last century. He was an expedition organiser above par. And he is a writer and lecturer numero uno. I have read expedition books written by climbers who have done better than CB when it comes to setting records on the mountain but when it came to writing a book, they could not even get past the base camp. Cheers CB. Keep writing and lecturing about your experiences. Perhaps you could write a book titled "Bonnington Cronies". That would make very interesting reading.

Beautiful book, I have read this one when I ...
Beautiful book, I have read this one when I was kid and it was a Russian translation..definitely shortened as I could remember. The original exceed my expectations. Beautiful English and very humoristic, despite dramatism of the events. Love this one, thank you Mr.Bonington!
