A good read - but not what you might expect.
First - let's make one thing clear. This is a modern day vampire book, but it isn't the usual genre of vampire romance. If you want a romance story, you'll only be disappointed. This is a vampire technothriller. Some of the characters are in love and not afraid to show it, but that's as far as it goes.Does the combination work? Yes, the powers of the Shadowspawn are well thought out and make them a credible threat and they're nasty enough that their "evil plans that must be thwarted by the heroes" don't come across as ludicrous - both common weaknesses of technothrillers set after the fall of the Berlin wall. And the techothriller parts add an interesting plot to the idea of vampires living secretly among us.I can't really say much about the actual plot without spoilers - but it is interesting and the right thing for our heroes to do is not clear.A final word of warning. This is a middle book of what I believe will be a trilogy. Don't expect the plot to resolve itself when you reach the last page.
