Claims to be 100+ Methylglyoxal the independent lab puts my batch at 126mg/kg. Thats medically benefical and okay for the price!
I got into Manuka honey a while ago after seeing somebody recommend taking it before bed with minerals or salt to restore your body overnight. The theory being the sugars, minerals are restorative and the antibacterial Methylglyoxal will boost your immune system. I tried it and it really seems to work for me. I have been a convert since. The Methylglyoxal is the active ingredient in the Manuka honey. The higher the levels of Methylglyoxal the higher the antibacterial activity. The higher it is through the pricier the honey tends to be. This Nelsons is a reasonable price considering its level. Before I bought this I did some research. I read a report where they had tested all the leading brands of Manuka honey and found many fell below the required amount of Methylglyoxal to be considered beneficial which is 83mg/kg of MGO. They also looked at second compound found only in Manuka honey lepto-sperin. Levels of the chemicals vary according to whether nectar is collected from only Manuka bushes or from a variety of plants, or whether Manuka is mixed with other honeys. 100mg/kg of lepto-sperin is what’s needed to be considered undiluted Manuka.Nelsons was on this test but it was the 30+ jar, not the 100+ sold on this page. It came in at 39.2mg/kg of MGO. So above what they claim, but not enough to be scientifically beneficial according to the study I read. The leptosperin levels were 83.8mg/kg falling below the test requirement. Nelson Honey themselves said their pollen tests showed its honey is 67 percent pure Manuka, with a blend of other honeys. The great thing about their company which I really like is every jar has a batch number where it is tested in an independent lab before being sold to make sure it’s up to standard. You can go to Nelson's website to enter it to get a report signed off by an M.Sc (master of science). I looked up mine (a 100+ jar) and found it contained 126 Methylglyoxal. So more than what they market it as and more than enough to be considered to have health benefits in the study I read. My batch number is in the pictures below if you want to look it up yourself. On a personal level, I feel like I get some benefit from taking it. Ive been using it for 3 weeks now. The taste is nice. The texture is more glazed than most other honeys I’ve had. It’s GMO-free and raw, unlike some other ones. I don’t have buyer’s remorse and might get some more in the future. I will probably try out a few others I found researching first before establishing a regular use honey. This honey is reasonable and works if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on honey!
