Tehran Noir (Akashic Noir)

Overall the short stories give a great insight in to the Noir Tehran and the daily lives of its people and how they live and cope with poverty, prostitution, crime or fear. However, I did not enjoy reading all the stories. Some of the pieces were very weak in describing the characters or the environment were the story took place. But from the 15 short stories I highly recommend reading the ones from: Vali Khalili, Majed Neisi, Salar Abdoh, Mahsa Mohebali, Hossein Abkenar and Gina Nahai.

Love this book. Some of the stories aren't as strong as others but there are a few very good ones that shouldn't be missed by readers. Salar Abdoh is an amazing writer and editor. Love his work.

This is a selection of short stories all set in Tehran. As you might expect from a 'Noir' the stories mostly portray the seamier side of Tehran. But most of the stories are well written and interesting.

Effectively shows the "other side", a side the leaders of Iran don't want anyone to see. The focus is, as the title implies, on Teheran only. There are seven states in Iran, and I would have liked to learn more about attitudes, culture and events in other states. Perhaps Tehran is the only city where these types of stories occur?

This is a great collection of short stories from Iranian authors from Tehran. I enjoyed every story in the collection. The stories are entertaining and at the same time give you a sense of life in modern Tehran.

This collection of fifteen short stories by Iranian authors may not always be easy to read, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that Tehran Noir is not only a solid collection of crime stories, but it's also an illuminating depiction of day-to-day life in Iran complete with its religious, political, and racial tensions.In Iran, the number thirteen is considered to be so unlucky that if that's your house number, it's shown as 12+1. Political tensions run so high that, if your loved one dies on the wrong side of the border, you can hire a "corpse fixer" to find the body and bring it to you for a proper burial. Afghans and Armenians are Iranians' choice for menial jobs, and the participants in a woman's stoning take photos with their cell phones in between sessions of rock-throwing.The stories also show us a bank robbery and what led to it; Qesas, the brutal "eye for an eye" of Islamic law; two men in love with the same woman; investigative reporters; and what mothers will do to protect their children.This is a culture that's very different from my comfortable existence here in the United States. I enjoy the Akashic Noir series because I love crime fiction, and there are plenty of solid crime-fueled stories to be found here, but what I've also found to be true is that the series also provides a look into other cultures, other customs, other points of view. This added insight is worth its weight in gold, above and beyond the talent shown in the collected short stories.

Well very honestly I got this book for one reason: Gina Nahai, and wow, was not disappointed. She is truly one of the finest contemporary writer regardless of style or nationality, and her embodiment of magical realism conjurs Marquez, easily. Her piece in this collection is reminiscent of her miraculous "Midnight on the Avenue of Faith" and a joy to savor every word, character and action. Now I look forward to reading the companion stories, hoping I find one as captivating as hers. Thank you Gina!

Se non fosse stato per una intrigante recensione scovata quasi per caso su un sito americano, probabilmente non sarei mai venuto a conoscenza della serie "Akashic Noir". Probabilmente sconosciuta in Italia, questa collana pubblica da più di dieci anni - e con una frequenza significativa - delle validissime raccolte di racconti "noir", con la caratteristica che ogni volume contiene esclusivamente storie ambientate in una particolare città del mondo. Anche gli autori dei racconti sono nella maggior parte dei casi originari del Paese al quale il singolo volume dedicato. Così, spinto da una certa curiosità e dall'amore che provo per i racconti di qualsiasi genere, ho deciso di provare uno dei volumi della serie di Akashic scegliendo quella che per me rappresentava una delle città più intriganti della collana: Teheran.Bene, devo dire che la lettura di queste storie mi ha decisamente conquistato. Seppure - come capita sempre nelle raccolte di romanzi brevi o racconti - ci sono evidenti oscillazioni nella qualità dei vari contributi, va riconosciuto che comunque in questo caso il livello generale delle storie è decisamente sopra la media. I racconti spaziano attraverso ambientazioni differenti, ma in tutti i casi il legame con la realtà iraniana è sempre molto forte e mai di facciata, e ci si ritrova così immersi in un mondo affascinante e complesso, talvolta molto diverso dall'immagine del Paese che ci viene fornita dai comuni mezzi di informazione. Ed emerge nfatti una realtà articolata e multicolore, piena di compromessi e ipocrisie, segnata inevitabilmente dalla terribile sequenza di rivoluzioni, colpi di stato, autocrazie e conflitti che hanno caratterizzato la recente storia del popolo persiano. Ognuno di questi racconti apre una finestra su questa complessità, offrendo un punto di vista differente e quasi sempre affascinante della realtà dell'Iran moderno.Le storie di questa raccolta oscillano tra il thriller, il giallo macabro, la violenza quasi gratuita e in alcuni casi regalano anche un po' di giusta ironia. La parte centrale del libro raccoglie alcune delle storie più belli, ma non sono assolutamente consigliabili per palati delicati! A volte, in alcuni dei racconti, sopraggiunge un po' di noia... ed è per questo che non mi sento di assegnare le cinque stelle. Ma in ogni caso sono assolutamente soddisfatto di questo acquisto e probabilmente a breve affronterò qualche nuova città!

Brilliant writing.. a compilation of noir stories written by various gifted writers from Iran.. this book defies all stereotypes and delves deep into Iran and its people. Personally a brilliant introduction for me in noir. Highly recommended.
