Short and Sweet Coming-of-Age Tale
This book is perhaps the shortest read next to AA Milne's play "The Ugly Duckling". Hoffman delivers an action packed short adventure without throwing too much history. It is yet another coming-of-age tale depicted through the lives of three 13 year olds - Martha, Trevor and Eli. Although they long to get away from home, when the time comes to choose, would they choose to leave everything including their parents or would they choose home?

I was disappointed how small was
This book I'll be honest,I was disappointed how small was, but I'm glad I have it,the McGill brother and Martha have my attention.Readin about people had limited of water, lawn, showers, swimming pools drained,Martha hated the fact that it never rained in Oak Grove.we need to take care the water like precious diamonds, when I was a kid, were I born ,for almost 3 years never rained, was a disaster people hungry looking for food, can happen in any place, please don't water the lawn every day,or waist it,I always said I can't live in a place don't have the ocean, now I live in Colorado,ha,ha,ha, I'm the sign of fish, please give this beautiful book to a young ones,is about friendship and love,is a little weird but very nice.Thelma.

Short & Pleasant
Sometimes you just want something short to read. Novels are an investment in time, but short books such as Indigo can be read in about an hour. I broke it into two days of reading. When my daughter was younger Aquamarine was one of her favorite movies. Aquamarine is also by Alice Hoffman and many of the themes in Indigo reminded me of the movie. I know the movie was different from the novel, but it still hit many of the same story beats.Indigo is not a long book. The plot isn't overly complicated, but sometimes you need something easy to read. It's a great book for this purpose

A YA BOOK THAT IS A BIT DIFFERENT - Refreshingly so.
What an odd little tale this one was. It is written almost in the mode of one of the many Irish folk tale of Selkies; the same mater of fact and whimsical tone you find in so many of those old tales is present which takes on an almost rhythmic beat as you read along. I absolutely relished the author's syntax in this work. This is the story of three friends in a small, could be anywhere kind of place, but in this case Texas town. It is dry there and the people of the village do no like water since their town was washed away by a flood in the past. The three friends, Martha Glimmer, a motherless young girl and two brothers, Trout and Ell McGill long to leave this dry boring place; to seek something more, to experience something that will fill the obvious void in their lives. They know beyond a doubt that there is something else out there, another world' a world they know they should be a part of in an instinctive way. Something is missing in their lives and they want answers. There is of course a mystical quality about this book, this short book, but that is only right as it deals with the mystical part of the inner heart. There are several things going on throughout this work; the importance of friendship, trust, family relationships and most important the message of acceptance. Not to throw in any spoilers, but there is something definitely fishlike about the two young boys. Their parents, a childless couple went on a vacation a number of years ago, and apparently "adopted" these two young men and have raised them in a loving home since. The boys are "different," in that they have webbed feet and hands and there is a look in their eye that is not all together of this world.I would have liked to have seen this work fleshed out somewhat as the author has used some fascinating personalities to tell her story...she just does not supply enough information which could leave some readers a bit frustrated I fear. I personally did not mind as I read the work more for the story telling rhythm the author uses more than anything else. This is a likable book with several good messages. It is a very fast read, but a read that you will want to ponder a bit to glean full value from it. I do very much recommend it and certainly suggest you add it to your reading list. I am giving this one five stars because for me it was a perfect fit and for me it was an extremely enjoyable read.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

A perfect book
I read INDIGO hot on the heels of AQUAMARINE, another short Hoffman novel with the element of water as its central motif. I thought AQUAMARINE could not be equalled ; I was mistaken. This book is marvellous. INDIGO concerns the two McGill boys and their friend Martha Glimmer. They live in a small American town nowhere near the sea. The boys are however rather. . .watery, possessing webbed fingers and toes and preferring fish to all other foods. Martha doesn't share these idiosyncrasies but she too is "different", an outsider. Their relationship is beautifully portrayed, as are the relationships with the other people in their lives. The prose is measured but poetic. Once again, I come away from Alice Hoffman's work feeling that the world is a more extraordinary place than we might give it credit for. Highly recommended.
