American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America

Wow! She never ceases to amaze...
American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America She has really created a treasure. This is an inspiring book of stories, pics, tips and a bit of history. I love it and my son (10 year old) is so excited that it was written with him in mind. "It feels so good to have someone so important care about us" (per my son about kids in America). My son has no political agenda, nor does this book. She makes no money on this book, but she is very proud of it none the less. I bought it along with a step-by-step how to book on gardening as this is my second year gardening and I am not very good. I knew this book was not a how to gardening book, and I knew it would inspire me. I look forward to using this beautiful book to help me create a garden that will bring my son closer to eating veggies because the only ones he eats right now are the ones I sneak in (thank you Miss Chase Lapine and Jessica Simpson for your sneaky and deceptive books The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food ). This book gives me hope for all of the over-weight kids out there that may decide they want a garden, hey, you never know. Benefiting from the fruits of your labor is an awesome message.

Words to Potential Gardeners Thinking About Purchasing This Book
I was suspicious that this book would only contain Mrs. Obama's narrative about her experience cultivating the White House Garden.... and yes, a lot of the book is dedicated to fun little stories concerning things like her "Let's Move!" initiative, the history of the White House Garden, and Bo the White House dog.But I was pleasantly surprised by how much functional gardening information there was! I do not know if first time gardeners could survive on this book alone, but it will definitely get you off on a good start. Probably most inspiring are the pages near the beginning where she lists everything that went wrong in the garden after the first year--I wish I had had that when I first started gardening several years back. And as someone who personally likes absorbing more than enough information, a lot of little details in this book are incredibly illuminating. And worst come to worst, if you, a first time gardener, decide to never garden ever again, this book is beautiful. Others have said coffee table quality. I will echo those sentiments and add that I am a coffee table connoisseur and this is a beaut: 1) most of the pictures are lovely, nay, divine 2) It's incredibly historical 3) It has recipes that look, and yes, taste delicious 4) It has inspirational snippets from the first lady.

Learning a lot from the book; about bees (who knew?) and planting Three Sisters (had to get those seeds). Still reading, still loving this book!

It's Everything I Hoped For and More!
As a vegetable/fruit/flower gardener for three dozen years now who has accumulated nearly as many garden books, my family reminded me that we hardly needed another "garden book." Yet my gardening interests have grown over many years to include promoting children's gardens in schoolyards, at summer camps, and giving workshops in libraries and in community gardens to demostrate best environmental practices and to answer questions. This book can give hope and joy to individuals, families, and gardening groups who want to make a difference in how we can all grow organically cultivated crops for the table and enjoy the harvest of our efforts. I give credit to First Lady Michelle Obama for using the center stage of the White House Kitchen Garden to improve the nutritional and physical health of individuals who learn by experience what it takes to grow colorful, tasty food in a garden. The photos in this book are inspirational and the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter layout make this a useful companion year round. This book uses the voices--and photos--of many experienced gardeners from around the country who are a part of the community gardening movement that notes well organized community gardens "grow community" as well as produce.

FORGET POLITICS - ENJOY THIS BEAUTIFUL AND INFORMATIVE BOOK ON GARDENING
First ladies and their "projects" interest me - from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama they all influence Americans during their time in the White House and beyond. So without hesitation, I ordered this beautifully designed and well-written book on the present White House garden, a brief history of gardening in America, and who benefits from the now lush garden on the White House grounds. What an interesting project! What's not to love about a garden with fresh produce to eat and enjoy at home. I appreciated all the bright color pictures, the recipes, how cooks work in the White House kitchen, and the emphasis on nutritional foods.Thank you, Mrs. Obama, and the team who made your project come alive. The book appeals to those of us who find pleasure in watching seeds grow, on farms, in small gardens, raised beds, containers in the city, and even inside the home!Just enjoy this book, savor the information, and eat well. Better yet, plant something!

Great book, lots of information and lots of pictures
Great book, lots of information and lots of pictures. Note - this is not a "How to Garden" book, instead its a factual account of the Whitehouse allotment and a look at local production that has been inspired.
