A Comprehensive Reference
"Altum Angels - the Angelfish World - Altum Scalare Breeding Handbook" is undoubtedly the most comprehensive work on these fishes available. Horst Linke has compiled a complete story on the discovery, importation, maintenence, breeding, and rearing of these beautiful fishes. Additionally, he has documented the conditions of each biotope where the different species and varieties have been found. The geology and natural history of the Amazon Basin is covered, augmented by numerous maps and photographs. Finally, Mr. Linke credits several aquarists who have pioneered the first captive breedings of imported wild angelfish, both scalares and altums.

Album Angels, The Angelfish World, Altum-Scarlare Breeding Hanbook by Horst Linke, Publisher Hollywood Import & Export, Inc; 1st edition (August 1, 2017) would be more accurately titled: Horst’s Great Adventures in the Angelfish Motherland. Before we paddle down South American rivers, we must wade through pages of ads peddling fish supplies, some in English & others in Chinese. We take a side trip after landing: there’s the airport, crowded cities perched on hillsides, clothing boutiques, charming dining options, & golden treasures from the Bogota Museum.Biotropes of angelfish would be another accurate subtitle. The book is rich in photos taken along & above South American rivers, most in high or low tides. Linke discusses environmental factors that affect breeding in the wild. Nice, but I’m more interested in the living-room tank. The tides stay constant. I alone control this environment.Toward the end, Linke tosses in the basics of fish breeding with a focus on vast commercial facilities in China, Taiwan and his native Germany. Never a mention of genetics, not even (+/+). Forget (M/M, M/Gm, M/g).This may be a good book for those interested in the history of captive angelfish & their natural habitat, but it won’t do much for anyone trying to grasp the genetics of today’s varieties. Given some reviewers called this title: The definitive book on breeding angelfish, I expected at least one pea simple Punnett square. And, oh, yeah, The book contains pages & pages of ads for fish products, many in Chinese.
