The Anime Art of Hayao Miyazaki

Si bien los temas están bien explicados, este no es un libro de arte, es un ensayo muy detallado de los trabajos de Miyazaki, pero no es un libro de arte, no tiene ni una imagen, es puro texto sobre texto, u formato enorme de letra muy grande haciendolo muy cansado de leer, el diseño es bastante feo y la calidad es muy inferior.Si buscas información para hacer una tesis sobre Miyasaki es una buena fuente, si buscas un libro de arte, este no es el libro que buscas.

Dani Cavallaro è probabilmente la studiosa (anglofona) più eminente e neutrale su Miyazaki. Susan Napier, con cui a volte è un testa a testa, per me è un gradino sotto. Questo non significa che il libro di Cavallaro sia sufficiente da solo a comprendere Miyazaki o ad averne informazioni complete (è impossibile se non si conosce il giapponese, ma sia Napier che Cavallaro lo conoscono). Il libro si ferma a Howl e occorre acquistare "The latest works of Hayao Miyazaki" della stessa autrice, stavolta in formato tascabile.Di questo libro, che comunque in lingua inglese rimane uno dei testi più aggiornati e sinteticamente importanti su Miyazaki, avevo l'ebook, ma volevo poterlo annotare. Delusione massima, perché siamo di fronte a una stampa da un pdf o analogo, su formato A4 rifilato, con margine interno strettissimo, brossura pessima, che fa pieghe vicino al dorso, difficile da sfogliare, e con un margine esterno invece molto largo. Il risultato è che l'occhio fluttua senza ancoraggio, anche perché la riga è molto larga. L'interlinea invece è stretta e la dimensione del carattere è piccola.insomma, la stampa è un vero disastro. La copertina è un cartoncino che tende a rovinarsi e arricciarsi . Insomma, se lo avete in PDF (si trova), stampatelo in copisteria e fatelo rilegare, sarà senza dubbio meglio dell'edizione cartacea.Per quanto riguarda i contenuti direi 4 stelle. È un ottimo libro, davvero uno dei più "funzionali" su Miyazaki.Tuttavia case editrici, autori, e Amazon stessa devono imparare ad accettare votazioni molto rigide quando viene proposto un prodotto di qualità stampato così male. Si configura il "piccolo imbroglio" che delude l'acquirente e che non si deve mai far passere, nonostante il buon contenuto.Sconsiglio l'acquisto del cartaceo, meglio l'ebook.

It was hard to give this book only three stars, because, on one hand, it was a very enriching reading. Dani Cavallaro's analysis of Miyazaki's career and movies was extensive and academic in the best sense of the term. Every chapter devoted to describe the peculiarities of "Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind" or "Princess Mononoke" didn't address only the plot part. There were descriptions of technical aspects about the animation tecniques, the team work behind the movie, the promotion and distribution aspect, the cultural aspects behind Miyazaki's artistic choices.There were insight about the story of the Studio Ghibli, the works of Takahata and other directors of the Studio, important digressions about the relationship with the Western movie market (especially the US one) and the Disney and Pixar corps.So, why three stars?The style.It was unnecessary pompous at its best, too many adjectives, too much purple prose that made the reading quite difficult and annoying, from time to time. I would've liked a more flowing style, this work is full of interesting concepts and analysis but it forces the reader to re-read more than one time a lot of sentences (too long and too full of subordinate clauses), before fully understand their meaning.It's a pity, seriously.

I thought this would show artwork like my other book, but its just writing and no pictures whatsoever. I guess I didn't read the description well.It's a nice book, but not what I wanted. Returning and will exchange for a book with actual artwork.

A book about art of Myazaki without a single illustration? Are you kidding me? Waste of money
