This came SERIOUSLY dull. Actually
This came SERIOUSLY dull.Actually, I wouldn't really call it dull, it's more like unfinished... where it's easily half a millimeter thick on the thickest point of the "cutting edge"... and yes, the thickness on the cutting edge is not even.I knew what I'm getting into when purchasing this though, so did some serious sharpening on this (refer to Paul Sellers' youtube channel on how to sharpen a gouge, if you don't know how) and now it works great and looks like it would last for years! For people who are still deciding whether to get this or other, fancier options: I'd much rather spend my $100 on diamond sharpening blocks and stropping leather, and spend $10 here, as opposed to spending $100+ on chisel/gouges. They need sharpening anyway so you can't really escape the cost of the sharpening tools and the material on this gouge is carbon steel which is the same material on quality gouges - you're pretty much spending all those extra dollars on marketing and factory sharpening (I have yet to know a factory sharpened chisel/gouge that is really good enough to work with right out of the box, and like I said they need periodical sharpening anyway).

Perfectly decent
Good steel and nice handle. The factory grinds are not very good, but it's not too difficult to correct it.

Will need a lot of work
To say these are dull is an understatement. The cutting edge and the sides and bottom of the gouges will need to be re-shaped on a grinder or sanding belt before sharpening even begins. Unless you have the skills to do this without overheating the steel, these gouges are not for you.On the other hand, the steel appears to be very hard. Therefore, when you are done you should have gouges that stay sharp.

Needs sharpening. Otherwise nice. Strong and basic.
A pleasant surprise. These chisels look and feel great. 9 inches long with a robust handle that seems proper for striking with a wooden mallet. Im looking forward to carving with these. They are not sharp at all. It will take some time to hone them, but I was expecting that.At this price, I am considering buying a second set to ground with inchannel bevels.

Gouges have a Bevel but no Edge
For the price I did not expect much but really! As other reviewers noted the gouges are not usable without considerable work creating an edge. I would estimate that the termination of the bevel is a flat surface 0.2-0.4 mm (see photo). If you have a grinding wheel or a belt sander with a very fine grit belt you can get the smallest gouge into sharpness in about 20 minutes. I have nice quality gouges at home, but I needed to install a new doorbell at my granddaughters' house and I needed a quick Amazon delivery. None of the gouges will actually cut without spending time to create an edge. Overall the quality is quite low. Based on the need to resharpen twice while working the doorbell hole in soft wood, I suspect this is very cheap steel.

Great for the money, needs work to make useable
For $18 these are great. Finish isn't amazing and for some reason the second biggest gouge has the largest radius, while the largest gouge has about the same radius as the second smallest, which is a bit odd. As other reviews say they come no where near sharp, but after about 10 minutes with a grinder and about an hour with sharpening stones I was able to get a good edge on them all. Once sharp they're all solidly build and work great for the low price.

Not really worth it, even if you're prepared to correct them.
Bought these assuming that knowing what I am doing, I should be able to make this cheap set usable. And I was. However, it took much longer than I expected. The bevels aren't even perpendicular to the handle. I don't have a grinder, so I'd have to reshape on my diamond stones, which would take longer than is worth it. So I sharpened them on the diamonds and stropped them. They come out sharp after removing the machine marks, but alas they're not exactly straight, and for now I'll just live with that. I can live with that for hand-carving spoons, but I wouldn't recommend for any precision work.

Absolute rubbish
Absolute rubbish. Made of mild steel. Will not take or hold an edge. Fit and finish is rough. Unusable.
