A wonderful copy of the original Boys Scout manual.
1911, one of my favorite years. I was in the Boy Scouts in the late 60's and early 70's. It was interesting to read the founding manual for the best boys organization ever created. The Boy Scouts of America was founded and backed by the business leaders, intellectuals, great American men and warriors. I am sure they are spinning in their graves to what has happened to the BSA this century. I enjoyed reading the ways scouting was back then. The subjects and skills learned by the scouts benefited my colleagues and myself for the rest of out lives. I can survive and handle myself in the wilds of nature without getting lost or being in danger. The lessons contained in this manual are what is missing with today's youth. The manual is an interesting read and I am so glad it is available for us. It is a great guide to teach your children how to handle them selves in life and nature.

An interesting time capsule for an older generator
This book was interesting as it was meant for young boys that want to get into some pasttimes that would be good for them. It has a section on tracking, setting up shelters and developing values (mentioning King Arthur - I wonder if they know he is fictional?). There is a section on horses, which at the time (1911) was as important a skill as basic automotive skills . . . I assume, I was born in 1981.It was not as helpful as I would hope to gain some basic understanding of "roughing it" but was a very enjoyable time capsule into an era long gone. If you want to read a manual used by young boys over a century ago, this is great. If you want to learn some skills to use in the outdoors, there may be better alternatives.

Excellent child rearing guide...
even if the child isn't a scout. Great information and insights into civil information and interpersonal respect, excellent social studies basics, and a how-to in everything camping, hiking, water activities & outdoor life... Values that have almost been forgotten in America.

Bweware - the hard copy I received is missing page 5
Bweware - the hard copy I received is missing page 5, instead page 88 was placed there however the other side is page 6. So whoever made this copy made a mistake. However you can find it on the preview of the kindle copy. Also I rented the paperback from the library which is illustrated in color. The color does not add to anything, however I like the size of the paperback book better. Same amount of pages 400 + Forward + advertisements., the print is the exact same size and look as if it were copied from the same archive. It is not missing page 5. It would be easier to carry around.Other than that, the book is filled with interesting information and good starting point for a wide range of things. I recommended it for everyone of all ages.

This is the book to get for Survival
Theres a lot of books written out there from SAS UK soldiers to the new tech Boy Scout manual. But, this is the one to get.It will keep you alive with the bare minumum, no high tech things, no GPS, no down sleeping bag that weighs 2.5#, no batteries, no gas stove, no matches, NOTHING. They didn't have that back then. You will rely on yourself, no modern gadgets. & become a man (or woman) in the process, & develop morals, & know USA history quite well.History includes: did the USA purchase the SW USA from Mexico, or did it steal the land as some would say?Did the USA pay for it legitimately? Do you know your history?Do you know the true answer? This was common knowledge of USA citizens in the early 20th century. Seems USA citizens forgot it all. Read the book...Welcome to real survival techniques. Survival is more than "living off the land".It is knowing the truth & how to answer & defend yourself from the slings & arrows of people who want to take things that belong to you.

Not an official reprint but an amateur copy of their own book
I was really excited to get this but unfortunately it does look like a really bad reprint that someone took to their local printers. The front cover isn't even aligned on the book and a lot of the images on the inside are quite faded. The content of the book itself is great though.

Survival and Responsability 101
What can you say really? Part of our heritage for a reason. I was in cubs before moving to the city as a kid. Great memories and a great foundation.Got this for my family bug out bag / earth quake kit. If something happens to me these basics will help my wife and kids carry on with what is in the bag.Recommend and long for those times once more.

Homeschool supplement
What a lovely book! The print is rather smaller than I would have liked....makes for a crammed feeling and is intimidating for my 9 yr old to read so I will read passages to him for now. Hopefully,he will get interested in the next 18 months.Id like to be able to print out the badges so he could put them in a Report Book. I will be using this book as part of our homeschool curriculum
