A must-buy!
This is one of the best books on the use of the voice I have ever seen by two of the most prominent vocal coaches / teachers in the field. The wealth of material - both the practical exercises and the incredibly helpful information on their teaching methods and vocal production - make this book simply a must-buy for any student or teacher of voice. As a professional actor for nearly twenty years as well as now also being a university professor, this book provides a remarkably clear, effective, and enjoyable progression to voice training. The DVD that accompanies the book is beautifully produced with many of the exercises shown being explored - it's a brilliantly unique additional companion resource. Of course there are many books on voice that are also very informative and valuable, however, I can't think of any other book on voice quite like this one, that combines a DVD component with the text - an incredible tool for increased comprehension and assimilation. The authors have written an invaluable contribution to voice studies - you cannot find a better text on the use of the voice.

Not what I needed
I was searching for a book to use in my high school voice class....this was not it. It was dry and not appropriate for this. It might be okay for some background material for the instructor or the DVD might be of interest to the class depending on your approach to the subject. I do not recommend.

Amazing Details
I love the way the book is written--very personal and methodical. I love the underlying wisdom that you can feel the authors have regarding the practical aspects of the human voice. This is just what I needed for voice healing and strengthening.

Great!
I am a drama foundation student and this has been our main source for the voice classes. Different approaches work for different people - this has really worked for me for the following reasons:there are theory sections which inspire and create a sense of excitement and adventure. These are followed by exploratory and technique-building exercises which really do work! The accompanying dvd demonstrates most exercises (only nag I have found here: a few more of the exercises would have been useful inclusions). Finally there is reference to the other great voice practitioners' work, such as Cicely Berry, Kristin Linklater and Patsy Rodenburg, accompanied by detailed reading suggestions and reference to other resources, such as online poetry sites, practitioners sites etc. The authors clearly have amassed a vast experience of various distinct disciplines in the field, including for example, Chi Kung, Alexander's and Yoga in the body work, and integrated them into their own unified approach. The book is split into the following sections:1. relaxation, release, alignment2. connecting breath and voice3. exercising the support and control system4. resonance and range5. work on the articulatorswhile the appendices include sample workouts, biblios etcA very thorough, practical and effective approach for discovering, exploring and extending your vocal capabilities, including communication and expresiveness.PS I am adding to this review a year later. Being near the end of my second year in drama and having amassed some theatre and film performance experience, I still use this book and am still making fresh discoveries from it. For example, the mouths exercise (resonating from different areas of the torso and head) has recently yielded some great results - I believe it might have its roots in Grotowski. An invaluable resource that you will actually keep revisiting, rather than read once and forget on the shelf (or pile)

vocal art works book
Perhaps too professional for what I had in mind but slowly I'm finding the book helpful and interesting and revealing. As a classical music lover and choir member.

There is no DVD so you have to go online ...
There is no DVD so you have to go online, but it is not clear how this is done. Also, I believe one only has a limited amount of time with the On-Line while a DVD can be downloaded and kept potentially forever.
