V & B Manufacturing Handy 2lb Mattock Tiller (85231)

I use this for trail maintenance (clearing vegetation from cross drainages, removing brush and leaf clogs from side ditches and culverts, shaping dips, and digging out and seating flat rocks for step-stones. The mattock end is a little small for this work, but it's also lighter than a hazel hoe. I've also used it to lever or roll or lever small to medium fallen logs. Since the handle isn't fastened to the head, and since the handle is not too long, it packs easily., both in my daypack and in a small car trunk. That's a big plus when you have to hike a long way to reach the work.I don't trust the strength of the tines to pry off broken boards from a footbridge, or to dig out a really big rock. That would call for a more heavy duty tool.I'm happy to make the compromise , and give up a bit of capability for this tool, which is small and light enough to carry all day.

I can power into the soil easily to remove weeds around shrubs. I have tried to use other tools such as a hoe or shovel but I feel this works the best for me.

Whether you're tilling the garden soil for spring planting, weeding, or pulling blackberries, this tool does the trick without having to kneel down. You get much more leverage with the longer handle than you do just using your arms with the shorter handle. A great tool that's hard to find in stores with the longer handle.

This is my favorite gardening tool. I didn't give it 5 stars because it did not have the green grip padding on the handle as shown in the picture. Also I would like the flat blade to be a little longer than it is.

This was the perfect size with an ax-length handle. Using the tiller side of the mattock, I was able to up-root bushes easily. There were many different types of mattocks that I had researched, but this was the only one that I could find that had the tiller. This is exactly what I was looking for...

The Handy Mattock did not arrive as pictured (with a padded handle), however I see that the item's description does not mention a padded handle. I wish that the handle were ever longer, but I think the item will be useful to me.

This is a particularly handy tool to be used when edging the lawn, or removing sod in general. One side has lengthy prongs which will effectively grab on to trimmed sod edges. The other side of the head can be used for creating furrows and to dig up roots. Excellent tool !
