Dining on the B&O: Recipes and Sidelights from a Bygone Age

Snapshot into a bygone era
If there was ever a railroad buff who has walked the face of the earth, it is Thomas J. Greco. I have know him since the early seventies. I must confess that he is my brother-in-law. I used to think that he was bit "psyco" for his passion and love of all things having to do with railroads. Everytime he visited family in New Mexico, he was out on a new railroad adventure. I remember driving with him and family to see the Moffat Tunnel in CO when I was in graduate school in Denver. Now, who do you know that will go out of their way to taske a trek to look at a railroad tunnel? No wonder he and his friend Karl Spence compiled such a wonderful book of history that takes one back to an era that no longer exits. It is down right fascinating to read about the recipes from a Railroad company. I may have felt compelled to buy the book because Tom is my brother-in-law but I have not regretted the decision one bit. I love reading the recipes, ancedotes and stories that made the B & O so famous. I love the story of Tom's faux pas with the "homemade syrup on his pancakes! Very amusing, indeed!

Dining on the B & O Railroad
Dining on the B & O Railroad -Even if you never cook anything from this book, which is a shame if you do not, you will enjoy reading this book. What a reminder of the glorious days of the railroad. You can almost taste the food from these write ups and recipes. These are basically what I would call old-time recipes, and ones that my Mom used to make, and are just wonderful; I still use some of these recipes today, as my Mom was a fabulous cook - I am sure so many of us can say that!

Railroad Dining and History
Fair warning, the book was written by an old friend that I had lost track of. I have enjoyed the "sidelights" about railroad dining as much as the fine recipes themselves. In some areas it is still possible to book trips on private railcars that also provide fine meals, as illustrated in this book. Traveling through Santa Barbara, CA on a private dome car, while enjoying a champagne breakfast and watching the traffic jam on highway 101 is a fine memory that this book brought back to life.

A Wonderful, Nostalgic Read for Railroad Affectionados
Very interesting history of a bygone era, with excellent recipes and tips for re-creating some of the dishes served on railroad dinning cars, during the first two-thirds of the 1900's. If you've ever had "Dinner in the Diner," you should enjoy this book immensely.

Now this is a fantastic book......B&O really took good care of their passengers, even today the "Capitol Limited" carries the tradition. Try the Cornbread Pie, we had it last night, no leftovers.
