Fonda San Miguel: Thirty Years Of Food And Art

Perfect
I love this restaurant and wanted to try some of the recipes at home. I picked up this used copy for a reasonable price. The book was described as being in good used condition. I was pleasantly surprised to find the book looked to be in near perfect condition. The dust cover had an ever so small light crease in a corner. No writing or dog eared pages. It looked new to me. Will be putting this lovely book out on the coffee table and would consider buying other used books from this vendor!

Lush and Rich In Detail and Illustration
This book is masterfully written and rendered. It truly has something for everyone. A novice cook will get a primer for Pan-Mexican cuisine, while the adept will find recipes to challenge and improve skills. The beautiful art and photographs will grace any coffee table or bookcase. My Mrs and I get to Austin (and Fonda San Miguel) three to four times a year. But my Mrs has a serious addiction to the stuffed peppers and that's what I ordered the book for. However there are a wealth of recipes, (some, old favorites no longer on the menu) from appetizers to soups to main courses, to desserts, along with step-by-step prep instructions and a special ingredient section. The print is large, the recipes are detailed (but not densely written) with accompanying commentary, making the experience accessible to both novice and adept. I fall squarely in the middle and was challenged but never overwhelmed by any of the six dishes I attempted. No matter the cook's level, she/he must make the stuffed Chili Ancho. That dish is proof of God's love.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a valuable resource for the novice as well as the adept cook. If you are neither, it is still a treasure of art and culture celebrating Mexican cuisine in Texas.

Wo much more than a cook book
This book was a birthday gift. While visiting Austin, TX with my daughters we had Sunday brunch at Fonda San Miguel. The food and ambiance was so amazing I thought their cookbook would be a wonderful gift for the daughter whose bday would be a few days after we arrived home. I ordered it and it was waiting at the postoffice when we got home. It is so much more than a cook book. It is beautiful done and could really be a coffee table book when not in use in the kitchen. I haven't heard if she has tried any of the recipes yet but if they are based on the food they serve in the restaurant then they are fantastic. I think at some point I will order a copy of the book for myself but would probably copy any recipe I was using because I wouldn't want to get grease on this beautiful book. I would leave the book it's self on the coffee table.

Fonda San Miguel cookbook
Fonda San Miguel: Thirty years of Food and Art is not only a coffee-table book because of its beauty, it is a real cookbook with authentic Mexican food recipes. For example,Red Snapper Veracruz style and Shrimp in Garlic sauce. Fonda San Miguel is an Austin,Texas family-run restaurant with a long-standing reputation of serving fine Mexican food. Diane Kennedy is a frequent guest chef there. That alone gives the restaurant prestige for those cooks who are familiar with the type of cooking Diane Kennedy does. The recipes are outstanding and authentic. It is a beautiful Mexican hacienda-style restaurant and its food is equal to the atmosphere. If you go there, you will want this book. I love the book for its beauty and the recipes. It arrived after only about three days, and in excellent condition. I trust Amazon.com to deliver what it advertises. I have had one problem with a seller and Amazon.com took care of the problem immediately. Amazon.com is a reliable company to order from.PeggySan Antonio

I am not disappointed
Used to frequent this restaurant years ago but moved several hundred miles away. Am now back in the area but it is still quite a drive - more than an hour. I thought about the restaurant and looked online and found the cookbook - ordered two. My husband and I went to a brunch after reading the book - it was delicious and the decor is charming and the building is lovely in a beautiful setting. The cookbook is a work of art - what I would consider a coffee table book. My husband made the guacamole and the chipotle mayo in the book. I will be trying some of the more complicated recipes soon. For anyone who likes to read cook books - this is a beautiful addition to your collection. The restaurant is a "must" if you are in Austin. Say "hello" to Paco the parrot while you are there! The book ignites interest in cooking.

Beautiful cookbook light on recipes
This cookbook is a beautiful cookbook inclusive of many of the art pieces in the restaurant. I was however, disappointed in the cookbook recipes not being the ones that the restaurant uses. An example is that in the restaurant, the sopes, and gorditas are gluten-free. They are made using a combination of potato and corn masa--or so I was told by our waiter. The recipes in the cookbook include flour instead of potato or potato flour. Since it is necessary for me to eat sans gluten, I cannot use this cookbook for many of the recipes I was really interested in. I did email the restaurant to see if they would give me the recipe they use with potato but never heard back. Disappointed by a very good restaurant. Good enough if you do not have any gluten allergies. Rick Bayless cookbook is probably a better overall cookbook.

Awesome Food from a Great Restaurant
I visited Fonda San Miguel Restaurant while in Austin and had some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. Little boats made of blue corn meal filled with spicy toppings. A Chipotle Shrimp dish that made me want to just lick my plate. Since I've lived in Texas for 36 years, I've had a wide variety of excellent Mexican food so what a wonderful surprise to find something new that intrigued my palette. I bought the book because I wanted to try some of the recipes. This book is nice enough to be a coffee table book - which is where it is currently sitting since I haven't had any time to try new recipes. That's the only reason I'm giving it 4 versus 5 stars - I haven't tried the recipes but I have tried the food and it was awesome!
